WHY TAKE A LONG WEEKEND IN TASMANIA?
Just a short hop on a direct flight from Auckland, Hobart is a funky, friendly, arty and vibrant city that’s located on the south coast of Tasmania. Its thriving gastronomic scene may leave you wishing you’d packed some elastic-waisted pants!
MY HOT TIPS
It’s no secret that a visit to Mona (Museum of Old and New Art) is a marvellous must, but the real trick for sprinkling a little wow factor from the get-go is to upgrade your ferry ride to the ‘Posh Pit’. Champagne and finger food while sitting on a sheep at 10.30am? Why not!
Climb Kelly’s steps and enjoy a history walk – it’s a cheeky inner-city shortcut cared into a cliff to reach Battery Point, Hobart’s oldest and most charming suburbs. Here you’ll will find the best-preserved colonial-era suburb in Australia.
MY TASSIE HIGHLIGHTS
Take a local bus or tour to the top of Mount Kunanyi/Mt Wellington for epic views back across Hobart and the Derwent River – or if you fancy a challenge that comes with unparalleled views as your reward, test your fitness by challenging yourself to try the guided coast to peak walk.
Tasmania is renowned for its exceptional local produce, including divine seafood that you can enjoy fresh from the ocean. A few hours’ drive from Hobart you’ll find Freycinet National Park, where a unique dining experience awaits you at Freycinet Marine Farm. Don the provided waders and head to your semi-submerged, beautifully set dining table. Plump oysters are plucked directly from the water and shucked onto your plate, to be washed down with a glass (or two) of chilled Champagne. It doesn’t get better than this!
BEST TIME TO GO
Tasmania is a spectacularly enjoyable destination year-round, with amazing events like ‘Dark Fomo’ scattered throughout the calendar year, but our favourite time to visit is between October and April.
