The best time for you to visit New Zealand’s capital city is the shoulder season bridging February – March. The long, warm sunny days of the Wellington Summer makes this time of year a particularly pleasant time for you to visit. Daylight savings in Wellington is still in effect from February to March, meaning you are able to make the most of exploring and sightseeing with extended daytime hours, you’ll be presented with more things to see and do.

Summer weather: December - February
Wellington’s lovely beaches are perfect to cool off in during the summer months. The average temperature at this time of year is 19°C, the hottest time of year is late January. The maritime climate keeps the temperatures from soaring and humidity is in the comfortable range.
Autumn weather: March – May
Autumn time in Wellington you’re looking at average daily temperatures of a maximum 16.5°C and minimum 11°C. At this time of year the weather gets cooler, and the skies remain almost cloud-free. In regards of cloud over, March, is usually the clearest month of the year in Wellington.
Winter weather: June – August
A standard winter in Wellington is usually a wet one, in the winter months you’re looking at a 55% daily chance of rain with plenty of wind. So a Wellington winter wardrobe is more likely to be waterproof than woollen! The average temperatures in winter are between 6°C – 12°C.
Spring weather: September – November
You can expect a mixture of weather in Wellington during spring – crisp, sunny days can briskly change to cooler temperatures with spring showers. Average daily max temperatures at this time are 15.5°C and minimum 9°C.

For a great photo opportunity of the city Mount Victoria Lookout is one of Wellington’s most iconic destinations. Walk up the top of the Lookout and you will be rewarded with spectacular 360-degree sights of the city and harbour. Keep an eye out for the odd Lord of the Rings film site too.
Cruise down Cuba Street and take in its creative melting pot of buskers, art galleries, graffiti-filled alleyways and the endearingly colourful bucket fountain. The eccentric street is home to hipsters, artists and lovers of vintage to music memorabilia. Some of the city’s most authentic buzzing bars and cafes are dotted along this cool street. Cuba Street is a thriving hub for you to meet, busk, shop, simply the best place in the city to take in the capital of cool’s culture.
Situated around a beautiful natural harbour sets the scene for the wonderful Wellington Waterfront, one of the city’s most unique and striking precincts. What used to be the centre of the capital’s bustling ports the city has turned them into a vibrant, flourishing atmosphere with remarkable features and attractions. Lined with restaurants, buzzy bars, various artworks and sculptures to admire. Wander, bike, roller skate or blade your way around the Waterfront.

Around Wellington
The easiest way to get into the city centre from the airport is by taxi. At off-peak times you’re looking at around $30 NZ to get from the airport to the CBD.
The capital is renowned for its compact nature, it takes just twenty minutes to walk from one end of the business district to the other. You can easily explore further with the accessible and affordable public transport systems. Wellington has an excellent public transport system which is well used by the locals. Metlink’s easy to use journey planner gets you around the Wellington region using buses, trains or ferries. Pick up a Snapper card from the Wellington i-SITE Visitor Information Centre – the most efficient and cost effective way to pay.
