Great Ocean Road Melbourne to Adelaide 4 day/3 night tour
Depart Melbourne and travel over the West Gate Bridge through the vast volcanic plains en-route to Geelong.
The Great Ocean Road is divided into three spectacular regions: the Surf Coast, the Otway Ranges, and the Shipwreck Coast. Our journey begins in Torquay along the Surf Coast, where breathtaking ocean views and iconic stops like Bells Beach offer incredible photo opportunities. Keep an eye out for native wildlife, including Eastern Grey Kangaroos grazing in the wild.
Continuing along the dramatic cliff-hugging roadway, we visit the historic Memorial Arch and the seaside town of Lorne before stopping at charming Wye River, an ideal lunch spot overlooking the ocean. At Kennett River, spot koalas and colourful birdlife before travelling through Apollo Bay into the Great Otway National Park. Here, enjoy a guided walk through cool temperate rainforest filled with towering eucalyptus trees and ancient ferns.
On the Shipwreck Coast, marvel at the majestic Twelve Apostles and explore Loch Ard Gorge. The day ends in the picturesque fishing village of Port Campbell, where you can relax and enjoy local dining.
This morning pop back out to the 12 Apostles and take in the view during the morning sunlight and/or take a helicopter flight (at own expense) over this amazing coastline. We spend time visiting the unique formations of Loch Ard Gorge and immerse ourselves in the harrowing story of the wreck of the Loch Ard. It’s onto London Bridge and then The Bay of Islands before saying goodbye to this amazing stretch of coastline.
Explore one of Victoria’s largest regional towns of Warrnambool before having lunch in the township of Koroit at a quaint Aussie eatery.
At Tower Hill Wildlife Park we take a interactive tour learning about the local Aboriginal history, geology, flora and fauna. Arrive at the quaint fishing village of Port Fairy, our destination for the night. Enjoy a stroll around this beautiful township before enjoying dinner (at your expense) at the many local restaurants, café’s or pubs.
Today you’re bound for South Australia. In Portland there’s time for panoramic coastal views from the Cape Nelson Lighthouse, before a scenic drive through dense pine plantations to your lunch venue in the pretty riverside village of Nelson.
After lunch, cross the state border into South Australia and travel to Mount Gambier, home to the spectacular Blue Lake. Set within the crater of an ancient volcano, the lake is famous for its dramatic seasonal colour change, transforming each summer from a softer winter shade to a vivid cobalt blue. We stop for photos before visiting the enchanting Umpherston Sinkhole, a collapsed limestone cave now beautifully landscaped as a sunken garden. Stroll along terraced flower beds and beneath cascading vines to the floor of this remarkable natural attraction.
We continue to the historic town of Penola, closely linked to Australia’s only saint, Mary MacKillop. See the schoolhouse where she once taught and wander along Petticoat Lane, lined with charming heritage cottages and gardens.
Our day concludes in Naracoorte at the William Macintosh Motor Lodge. Enjoy dinner at the award-winning Highlander Restaurant and relax with a drink from the licensed bar.
Another exciting and diverse day of discovery on this Great Ocean Road itinerary, starting with a drive through the Coonawarra vineyards where Australia’s most illustrious Cabernet Sauvignon vines thrive on the famed rich red “terra rossa” soils.
Enjoy a guided tour of the World Heritage–listed Naracoorte Caves, one of the world’s most significant fossil sites. Explore Victoria Fossil Cave, where impressive stalactites and stalagmites surround the preserved bones of giant prehistoric animals. After morning tea at the famous Keith Bakery, we continue through South Australia’s vast farming and grazing country, where wide-open landscapes showcase the true Australian countryside.
In Coonalpyn, admire the striking grain silo murals that dominate the town skyline. Passing through tiny communities including Ki Ki, Yumali and Coomandook, we reach Wellington for a relaxing ferry crossing over the mighty Murray River. Lunch awaits at Bremerton Winery in the Langhorne Creek wine region, with an opportunity to sample local wines.
Travel through the Adelaide Hills to heritage-listed Strathalbyn before arriving in historic Hahndorf, Australia’s oldest German settlement. Our journey concludes at Mt Lofty Summit with panoramic views over Adelaide, before drop-off at your accommodation around 6:00pm.
