YASAWA ISLANDS

Yasawa Islands

Yes, the Yasawas are all-out gorgeous, and if being a little out of step with the rest of the world appeals to you, you’re going to love it here. It’s even more relaxed than Fiji’s other tourist spots; we like to describe it as going back a couple of decades, Bula time. In fact, a couple of actual decades ago, these islands were regarded as seriously remote. But that’s just the start of their appeal. They have some of the most beautiful beaches on earth – fabulous stretches of white sand, facing dazzling turquoise and blue lagoons.

All the resorts are small and a stay here means a complete departure from the world of commerce – no shops, no banks, no traffic, no tension. Just peace, quiet and stunning surroundings. Lodgings range from clean and comfortable backpackers to total luxury but they all have one thing in common: the friendliest service you’re ever likely to find.

So, where are these magical isles? Around 3 hours northwest of Nadi by sea, aboard the Yasawa Flyer, better known as ‘the yellow boat’. We advise you to book in advance, as there is only one voyage daily and it’s very popular, with grand views all the way.

SOME THINGS TO SEE AND DO IN THE YASAWA ISLANDS

Island Hopping ISLAND HOPPING

Awesome Adventures Fiji will show you the real Fiji with a hint of “adventure” and the guarantee of an “awesome” time in Fiji’s Yasawa Islands. Island Hop to get a taste of a few islands with one of the Awesome carefree packages that will take you off the beaten track to stunning locations. Accommodation ranges from those happy with bare essentials to those looking for more creature comforts.

Snorkel with sharks SNORKEL WITH SHARKS

Underwater shark encounters at Kuata bring snorkellers face-to-face with both the whitetip reef shark and the blacktip reef shark; species that can reach lengths greater than 1.5 metres. The water is unlikely to reach depths greater than six metres, allowing novice snorkellers to hover on the surface, while those with confidence can duck dive to get a closer look. Expert guides are on-hand for safety briefings and to share their knowledge about these amazing creatures, their habitats and behaviour.

Snorkel with Manta Rays SNORKEL WITH MANTA RAYS

Between May and October, manta rays make a beeline for the feeding channel between Drawaqa and Nanuya Balavu Island, because it’s here they find the most magnificent banquet of plankton. When mantas are sighted, the sound of the lali (traditional drum) echoes across the beach and signals guests to jump aboard the boats.

Learn to dive LEARN TO DIVE

The Yasawas boast some of the most colourful reef ecosystems on the planet, including 1,200 fish groups, hard coral and turtles. Introductory dives incorporate shallow dives in depths no more than nine metres, utilising Fiji’s tranquil environment to learn how to use the gear, equalise ears and breathe. Added reassurance comes in the form of a Fijian dive instructor. For something a little more challenging, open water courses take 3-4 days and the theory can be completed online beforehand, granting participants more time in the water rather than the classroom. Sawa-I-Lau Caves SAWA-I-LAU CAVES

An ancient limestone formation, carved by waves and crafted into a chamber of vertical walls and turquoise water, they’re often described as the ‘heart of the Yasawas’.  The caves themselves are hidden within an attractive little island and the outer chasm is a tall atrium accessed via a small stairwell. Those up for more excitement can choose to enter a secondary, more secretive, cavern via an underwater tunnel. (Image: ©Blue Lagoon Cruises)

Hiking HIKING

A highlight for visitors to Waya Lailai Island is a guided sunrise or sunset hike to the summit. With breath-taking views of vast ocean and golden beaches it’s a spectacular sight. Make your way through, trees, scrubs and boulders to catch the views of the sun rising or setting over the islands beyond. The memories will last a lifetime.

Private Beach Picnic PRIVATE BEACH PICNIC

There are few places left in the world where you can enjoy an entire beach to yourself! Tuck into a romantic picnic & champagne as you switch off & relax with your better half at one of Yasawa Island Resort’s 11 secluded beaches. With names like Champagne Beach, Lovers Beach and Paradise Beach they are as dreamy as they sound.
