Central America is blessed with Caribbean beaches. Mayan temples and mysterious pyramids set in dense jungle home to unimaginable biodiversity. A visit to Cuba can feel like a magical step back in time, yet like all of Latin America utterly compelling.
With some of the most unforgettable spine-tingling experiences available on earth, it's the places and people that make it such a wonderful continent to explore and visit time and time again.
You can fly direct to Central America from major hubs in South America or via the USA.
Belize has an intriguing history – independent since 1981 briefly colonised by the Spanish and later claimed by the British who named it British Honduras. The beaches, and the snorkelling & diving along Belize’s barrier reef are superb. Like its neighbour Guatemala, almost hidden in the jungles are mysterious Mayan ruins, reminders of a sophisticated civilisation that once flourished here up to 4,000 years ago.
Guatemala has a turbulent history, its strong people proud of their survival and an inspiring crowd to meet. An essential destination for anyone interested in ancient ruins. Tikal, where pyramids rise out of the jungle, is arguably Central America’s most magnificent Mayan site. Add to this the country’s Spanish colonial past, shown in its beautifully preserved colonial buildings and excellent language schools
Set amongst lush forest alive with wildlife and lava-spilling volcanoes, Costa Rica also boasts pristine beaches on both Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Sea coastlines. Blessed with both rainforest and high altitude cloud forest, Costa Rica has developed canopy walks to bring exotic orchids and bromeliads up close, and for the adrenaline junkies, go wild on a network of flying-fox style zipwires.
Often overlooked at times, Panama offers immense natural beauty with its marvellous beaches, tropical rainforests and mountains, whilst Panama City is full of energy and excitement. The San Blas Islands present a cobalt and turquoise sea speckled with coral gardens, palm islands and thatched-roof Kuna villages. The Kuna women stand out in this beautiful landscape, with their colourful dresses and beautiful blouses.
