I cruised on Viking Sun from Lisbon to Miami in December when she was just five weeks old. The fourth ship for Viking Ocean, the Viking Sun is as stunning as her three sisters, soon to be four sisters, with the upcoming launch of Viking Orion.
Viking ships are loaded with understated elegance, Scandinavian style and design. This is a fleet of new, all veranda, state of the art ocean ships, each one identical and in my opinion perfectly formed!
The Viking living room is the perfect place to relax and catch up with friends, or enjoy a complimentary latte or cappuccino with some tasty Scandinavian treats. Head through the lounge to the state of the art fitness centre or The Viking Spa which are also included in your cruise fare.
Viking cruises have no kids, no casinos and they are not about constantly trying to sell you extras. You will enjoy a complimentary shore excursion in each port. If you want something a little more adventurous they offer a fantastic range of optional extra shore excursions with great content for a reasonable additional cost.
Wine and beer is included with meals but if you prefer to go “All Inclusive” you can add the full silver drinks package for only US$20 per day. I loved the relaxed on-board atmosphere where it is simply okay to relax in a gorgeous lounge if you want to or enjoy a choice of different dining options at no extra cost.
The food is first class with highlights such as Manfredi’s Italian and The Chefs Table. These would rival any fine dining restaurant on shore. High Tea in the winter garden was a must each afternoon and the amazing burgers from the pool grill were like nothing I have had on-board a ship before. We also delighted in an evening at the Kitchen Table where the Head Chef prepared an amazing meal exclusively for our group of friends.
Our evenings would start in the Explorers Lounge, which has the perfect view for a sailway and feels like a luxury European lodge. Then time for the theatre to watch an interesting guest speaker or musical act, with nightcaps at Torshavn bar which has the atmosphere of a Parisian Café from the 1920s.
The technology on the Viking Ships is amazing with free wifi all over the ships and it is fast! There's so many interactive platforms, with electronic game tables and touch screens all over the ship to keep you updated with the latest news without having to go back to your cabin.
In conclusion, if you prefer your cruises to be more inclusive and the sound of soothing string quartets, to thrashing rock music. If you don’t want water slides, kids and too many gimmicks, then this is the cruise line for you.
