INSIDERS GUIDE TO ADELAIDE

By Tom Ricketts

1.
TASTE TEST THE CENTRAL MARKETS

A stop by the Adelaide Central Markets is an absolute must do while in town, especially for foodies. The historic market is the largest undercover market in the Southern Hemisphere and has been operating for 145 years. It’s mainly fresh fruit, cheese, meats and sweet goodness to be found here, none of that tacky souvenir stuff. Start your exploration with a Central Market Tour which takes you to all the tastiest stalls that are just too good to risk missing.
HOT Tip:  Arrive early to see the market transform, or visit late to get some scrummy bargains.

2. SEE THE CITY FROM THE ROOFTOPS
Adelaide has a fast growing addiction with rooftop bars, and they’re springing up all over the city. Obviously the bars have great views, but are also great for Adelaide’s long hot nights when sleeping is not an option!
HOT Tip: Rocket Rooftop is a local favourite thanks to its retro furniture, movie nights and sometimes even live music; but Unley has a much cosier vibe, and definitely isn’t as noisy.

3. ADMIRE ABORIGINAL ART
With 40,000 pieces, the South Australia Museum is home to the world’s largest collection of Aboriginal artefacts! There’s everything from everyday equipment like spears and canoes, to amazing artworks and sculptures.
HOT Tip: Great for the family as kids under 16 are free.

4. EXPLORE HISTORIC NORTH ADELAIDE
Just over the river from the central city is the suburb of North Adelaide. One of the oldest parts of the city, North Adelaide is jampacked full of historic churches, beautiful parklands (including the Adelaide Oval), and oodles of gorgeous old cottages.
HOT Tip: Many of the historic buildings have been converted into accommodations, including the old North Adelaide Fire Station which comes fully equipped with an authentic 1942 fire truck! And yes, they even have fireman costumes for that cheesy family photo op!

5. SEE PANDAS! IN ADELAIDE!
There’s only 51 giant pandas in zoos outside of China, and Adelaide has two of them! Wang Wang and Funi are easily the most popular couple in the state!
HOT Tip:  Although currently on hold due to the pandas being… let’s just say ‘frisky’; there is usually a VIP tour available that allows you to enter their enclosure and feed them! Ask your House of Travel consultant if it’s available during your travel dates.

6. WHISPER SWEET NOTHINGS AT THE WHISPERING WALL
Just outside of Adelaide is one of her secret gems, the Barossa Reservoir. The reservoir was created in 1902 by the building of a dam which was hailed as an engineering feat at the time. The dam (which looks like a mini Hoover Dam) has an amazing parabola effect which means you and another can stand at either end of the 140 metre long structure and very clearly be able to hear each other whispering!
HOT Tip: Arrive as early as you can to have the place to yourself, and more importantly, avoid the tour buses.

7. SUN AND SAND IN GLENELG
Adelaide’s favourite beach is without a doubt, Glenelg. Here you’ll find a beautiful white sand beach, plenty of al fresco dining, a bustling marina, and even a couple of hotels if you like a sea view. Adrenaline junkies will love the Helava Jet [boat] rides, and for nature lovers there’s swimming with dolphins.
HOT Tip:  Taking the tram to Glenelg is half the experience, and it only takes 20 minutes! You’ll find city stops in Victoria Square and Rundle Mall.

8. CHOCOLATE
Adelaide is the very proud home to Haigh’s Chocolate, one of the most loved icons of the city. To put in perspective, Adeladians love their Haigh’s like we love our Whittakers. Probably their most famous product is the chocolate frogs, and we’d have to agree they’re pretty good.
HOT Tip: There’s three stores in downtown Adelaide, but head to their Parkside store where the factory is located for a 20 minute tour of the factory, and discounted seconds
