AIRLINE REVIEW

AEROMEXICO.

Great Southern Rail Tourism   By House of Travel

Aeromexico is the national flag carrier of Mexico, and the country’s largest airline. They operate from their hub in Mexico City, as well as the city of Monterrey. The airline can trace its history back to 1934 and was once owned in part by PanAm. The airline was one of the founding members of the SkyTeam alliance which includes Air France/KLM, Delta and China Airlines.

The Difference

  • As well as wine and beer, Aeromexico serves tequila aboard their aircraft!
  • Aeromexico is 49% owned by Delta.

The Classes

AM PLUS This service is pretty much the same as Economy but you get an extra four inches space between seats (i.e. exit row seats or the very first row). You also get priority check in, boarding and luggage return.
CLASE PREMIER This is Aeromexico’s Business Class service and is only available on their new 787 Dreamliner aircraft. You’ll receive larger TV screens, lie flat seating, priority check in, priority boarding, lounge access, priority luggage return, exclusive line at customs/immigration in Mexico, an extended meal and beverage service, inseat power outlet and USB port and an amenities kit. Checked luggage allowance is two pieces at 32 kilograms each.

Destinations

Mexico City and most major cities in South America, as well as some destinations in Central/North America.

The Hub

MEXICO CITY AIRPORT. This airport is easily the largest in Mexico, and second largest in all of Latin America. Most of the airport is noticeably old, and it operates way past its capacity. Because of this, lines at immigration and security etc can be long. Most bags go through a scanner, but travellers are then asked to press a button which will make a light flash red or green. Green and you pass through unobstructed, but if red flashes, it means they’ll do a manual search of your bag. Aeromexico have their own terminal (Terminal 2) at the airport which is new, and a much better experience all round. The airport is located relatively close to the CBD, and taxis are strictly vetted to ensure a safe ride for tourists. A new airport is being built to replace the incumbent, and should be ready by 2020. Some airlines (mainly lowcost carriers) also use Toluca Airport which is about 30 minutes away.
