Formerly better known as Canton, the third largest city in the country and the busiest bustling trade and transport hub of China. Set on the banks of the Pearl River, home to China’s biggest trade fair – the biannual Canton Fair. The city has an excellent port and local rail network with quick access available from Hong Kong or Macau. For those seeking culture and history, Guangzhou has many attractions including the Chen Clan Academy notable for its rich decorations, carvings and engravings. It is also the home of Cantonese cuisine. The history of Guangzhou chronically displays the strategic trade port to the South China Sea, characterises the colonial background and the multiculturalism since the early centuries of the city, combined contributing to the Guangzhou modern metropolis essence.
Start your day with a visit to the Sun Yat Sen’s Memorial Hall, a monument to Dr Sun Ya-sen, the forerunner of the Chinese democratic revolution. Explore the Temple of the Six Banyan Trees, originally built in 537AD and famous for its flower pagoda before ending your day at the Chen Clan Academy. Originally serving as a temple for ancestor worship and a residence for Chen descendants who travelled to Guangzhou for their imperial examinations.
An evening cruise on the Pearl River is one of the highlights of a visit to Guangzhou. The city’s skyline at night is a visual feast of light and colour and offers a different, colourful perspective. The city’s skyscrapers including the impressive Canton Tower and river spanning bridges are lit with spectacular lighting. You will also see Shamian Island and the Pearl Music Hall as you cruise along the river.
