Family trip to Fiji

We travelled to Fiji in September 2017 for a much needed family holiday and this beautifl island escape did not disappoint.  The Fijians are amongst the warmest and friendliest people I have encountered on my travels - big Bula welcomes and smiles wherever you go.  My daughter is 8 and absoultely loved the kids clubs and meeting new friends from all the world - she still says that is one of her best holidays.  You cannot go wrong with Fiji if you are looking for a great holiday with something for every-one in the family on offer - beautiful warm beaches and hot sunny days provide for the perfect NZ winter getaway - be sure to book in advance though ( espcially over school holidays ) as Fiji is very popular all year round.

Chile and Peru April 2016

I was lucky enough to tour lead a group of travel agents on a familiarisation trip to South America - we visited Santiago in Chile and the Sacred Valley, Cuzco, Machu Picchu and Lake Titicaca in Peru.  This was such a fantastic trip and one I would recommend with no hesitation.

The highlight of the trip would have to be Machu Picchu which lived up to every one of my very high expectations.  My advise when visiting this remarkable place is to book a guided tour - our guide was brilliant and made the trip so personal with her local knowledge of the ruins and the importance of Machu Picchu to the ancient Inca and their way of life.
We also spent the night in Aquas Calientas ( gateway to the ruins ) and were up early in the morning on the second day to explore the ruins at our own pace - we also trekked to the Sun Gate which is well worth the walk and the gateway to the Machu Picchu when trekking the Inca Trail. I would also recommend taking insect spray and repellent for your visit as there are quite a few flies and insects which make the ruins their home.
If you are interested in trekking the Inca Trail, you should be booking this six months in advance as the Inca Trail permits are limited and sell out very quickly – only 500 a day are available and they are usually sold out 5 – 6 in advance.

Other highlights of the trip included a visit to the coastal town of Valparaiso ( Chile )  which is home to the famous poet and diplomat, Pablo Neruda.  The Sacred Valley in Peru was also very special as was our home stay on Lake Titicaca where you can stay with one of the locals in their home.  This was a very unique and humbling experience.

I was also surprised at how little English is spoken in Chile and Peru and it will be a good idea to brush up on your basic Spanish before you leave.

I loved my time in Chile and Peru and would love to return to South America to explore a bit more of this fascinating continent.
