What I always take on holiday

  • I always start my packing with one pair of everyday walking shoes
  • For short trips, pack outfits (including accessories) in separate packing cells.
  • I always pack my smile and a sense of humour. Both enrich my holiday.
  • An emply water bottle to fill on flights. A cup of water just isn't enough
  • Photos of my mountain. People love to see where you live
  • A torch. You never know when it will come in handy
  • I have a small power board, that way I only have to use one adaptor.
  • Avoid over-packing
  • Always keep medication in your cabin luggage
  • My camera and phone. Also pack all your leads in 1 packing cell.

Where I've Been

Favourite Holidays

FRENCH POLYNESIA - Tahiti and Moorea

Beautiful Tahiti and Moorea are just a 5 hour flight away. The combination of a  tropical paradise with wonderful Pacific French culture was just perfect for a weeks holiday. Often promoted as a romantic, honeymoon destination Tahiti offered so much more. From their infamous surf break Teahupoo to swimming with Reef Sharks ( no cage needed ) and Stingrays there is something for those looking for an adventure. Swimming in warm lagoons and snorkeling in crystal clear water was magical and the kids will love it.
Highlights for me were staying at the Sofitel Moorea La Ora Beach Resort and  a full day trip on the lagoon  with Miti Tours.

PATAGONIA

In the southern part of Argentina you will find Patagonia. For those that want scenic splendor and adventure activates this region will more than deliver. Some of my highlights were, Trekking to Mount Fitz Roy massif , donning crampons to ice trek on Glacier Viedma, visiting Perito Moreno which is the third largest glacier in the world, a horse ride and trek to Torres del Paine Towers in Torres del Paine National Park and staying at The Singular Patagonia hotel in Punta Arenas.
Getting to Patagonia is easy from Buenos Aires which warrants a 3-4 night stay. With it's wide boulevards and European inspired architecture Buenos Aires feels a little like Paris. Enjoy an evening at "The Argentine Experience" or an "Asado Neighbourhood food tour" and meet the locals.

SECRETS OF MELANESIA

On board the Spirit of Enderby
12 days sailing from Honiara, Soloman Islands to Port Vila, Vanuatu
The Spirit of Enderby is an expedition ship carrying just 50 passengers. Sailing from Honiara the capital of the Solomon Islands we discovered idyllic islands and isolated villages where unique time-honoured traditions are still alive. Life has changed little as visitors from the outside world often only arrive once a year.
Each island we visited offered a glimpse into the villages culturally rich life where traditional currency was still Malaitan shell-money, used as a dowry and worn as a status symbol. Villages live in simple dwellings with no running water to electricity. We had opportunity’s to visit the schools, churches and village gardens and enjoyed the traditional dancing and ceremony’s each village entertained us with.
This journey also offers some of the greatest underwater experiences in the world, with an abundance of marine life and coral gardens that draws you in to explore a magical underwater world. During frequent snorkel excursions throughout the expedition everybody has the opportunity to appreciate the beauty beneath the waves.
In Espiritu Santo we visited the iconic blue holes and beautiful Champagne Beach and then Ambryn the island of volcanoes.
Meals on board the ship were a set menu which changed daily and excellent. Each evening expert speakers talked about the culture, fauna and flora we encounter and we were briefed on the next day’s itinerary.
This whole trip was an experience of a life time and one I will always treasure.

BRAZIL

Brazil is all about long golden beaches, lush jungles, carnival music and culture. Rio was a wonderful surprise with it fabulous hotels overlooking the beach and spectacular views from Sugar Loaf Mountain and Christ the Redeemer. There are “all you can eat” Brazilian Steakhouse Houses and live bands with samba dancing. Such a contrast to an Amazon Jungle experience which is all about the wildlife and village culture. I have been fortunate to visit a range of affordable hotels and luxury resorts plus stay in both an Amazon Lodge and compare that with an Amazon River Cruise.

SRI LANKA

Sri Lanka is the whole package. Beaches, wildlife, hill station tea plantations, culture, food, shopping, the list goes on. Such a family friendly destination with all the excitement of neighbouring India but cleaner and less frantic. The idea trip would be a food adventure with some elephants and leopards added. I can’t wait to return.
