An opportunity came up to go on an educational trip to South Africa so I jumped on it! Two weeks visiting such a beautiful country had many highlight but the two fvourites were two nights on the Rovos Rail luxury train from Pretoria to Cape Town and 3 nights on Safari in Kruger National Park. Seeing the animals in their own environment while out on Safari was something I will never forget and highly recommend it!
It was time for a Tropical Holiday to Fiji! A night in Denarau at the Hilton upon arrival was a great way to kick off the relaxing before heading off on a three Night Captain Cook Cruise and five nights on Treasure Island. A great way to experience Fiji a few different ways. If you like a good fish dish, I highly recommend trying the local dish, Kokoda (was part of my daily diet whilst on holiday!)
A holiday to Bali was in need to farewell a cold Christchurch Winter. 10 Nights was a great amount of time away, split between Ubud and Nusa Dua.
Again - Great food! Good shopping and just a lovely place to do as little or as much as we felt like. A cooking class in Ubud and a Surfing lesson in Kuta were highlights along with the best seafood lunch ever in Jimbaran Bay. A great place to go to soak up some sunshine and experience another culture. A very relaxed and memorable holiday.
An opportunity came up to go to Singapore and Vietnam so of course I snapped it up! Flying Singapore Airlines was fantastic and I thoroughly enjoyed being able to go for a swim in Terminal 1 between flights to get some fresh air and to freshen up before the next leg of the journey. A visit to Raffles Hotel and a Singapore Sling at the Long Bar was a great experience and of course I will be going back to Singapore for more shopping and sightseeing in the near future.
Vietnam was extremely interesting with their amazing food, history and culture to experience. A highlight for me in Hoi An was a cycling tour and visit to the famers gardens where we also received a delicious lunch and the most amazing foot massage.
Ho Chi Minh City was full of history and culture - and very hot! A visit to the Cu Chi tunnels was not to be missed and gave greater understanding of what went on during the war.
I will definitely be going back!
Late April I was back off to the USA to do a Globus Tour around Canyon Country in the South West. Starting in Phoenix, Arizona we made our way up to The Grand Canyon where was had a couple of nights on the South Rim to explore. While there I took advantage of an optional helicopter trip from the South Rim to the North rim to check out the spectacular views. Zion National Park was definitely a highlight and somewhere I would love to go back and explore in more detail - its like something out of Bambi! Las Vegas was our last stop where there was time for shopping and exploring along The Strip. Las Vegas was a really fun place to visit and I will certainly be going back again for a longer length of time in the future to watch some of the many amazing show they have.
I was lucky enough to go on a Famil trip to Samoa for a week to check out the local sights. My favourite spot that everyone must visit is the To Sua Trench which is a big salt water swimming hole connected to the ocean. Access to this is via a long ladder leading down to the water. Not for the faint of heart! Swimming with and feeding the Turtles on Savaii was also a major highlight and something I highly recommend doing. Samoa is a great place to hire a rental car and explore, or sit back, relax and swim. Their local Fiafia nights put on at the resorts are also pretty fun – just avoid sitting in the front row if you don’t want to be pulled up on stage!
The cultural village in Apia was also really interesting where we saw a traditional tattoo being done, learnt 101 uses of one coconut and watched some fire dancing just to name a few of the things on offer.
I worked on a luxury yacht in the South of France which meant I was able to spend six months sailing around the Mediterranean while getting paid! After the yachting season was over, I embarked on a journey around Eastern Europe travelling by train from city to city for 3 months. The Sound of Music Tour in Salzburg was a high light as was skydiving in Prague. After Europe I spent a month in the UK to catch up with friends with the hope of experiencing a ‘White’ Christmas….it never snowed. On the way home I stopped off in Thailand for a month to enjoy the amazing food and beaches on Koh Tao, Koh Phangan and Koh Samui. The Bai Pai Cooking class in Bangkok was a highlight and I still love to cook what we learnt to make most weeks.
2009 was the beginning of my travelling adventures where I worked in a USA Summer Camp in New Hampshire for 3 months as a hiking counsellor. After camp I spent 3 weeks travelling from the East Coast to the West Coast before flying onto the UK and Europe. Horse riding though Monument Valley was one of the most memorable days of the tour and running along the road exactly where Forrest Gump stopped running in the film was a pretty good photo opportunity. Going to a Red Sox baseball game at Fenway Park was also a highlight – although I was more excited about the Cracker Jacks than the actual game!
My first trip to Europe was a bit of a whirl wind with 1 or 2 nights in each place. Ireland was one of the favourite places I visited - You can’t go past a good Irish Stew and the awesome live music!
