Puglia on a Vespa, Italy

A week to discover the ’Heel of the Boot’, known for its ancient farmlands crisscrossed with stonewalls, small authentic villages, and hundreds of kilometres of coastline. Today Puglia maintains its own distinct and authentic identity, and an eclectic mix of cultures. In a land where the cuisine is all-important, Puglia's ‘cucina povera’ (peasant cooking) is legendary, featuring olive oil, grapes, tomatoes, eggplants, artichokes, peppers, mushrooms, olives, cheese, fresh seafood...and the wine is world renowned. What better way to explore this peninsula than on a Vespa ...!! The Italian Scooter is a modern 125cc GTS Vespa with an electric start and automatic transmission.

Itinerary
Day 1: Lecce
Explore the old town of Lecce, a masterpiece of Baroque art in southern Puglia with countless churches, a Greek theatre, a Roman amphitheatre and big noble palaces in hidden and narrow streets.
Day 2: Circuit ride - On the traces of the Francigena Way (approx. 45km)
Visit an old Masseria (traditional farmhouse) where you can sample excellent breads, spicy or mild filled focacce, taralli and other specialities as well as fresh produce from the farm.
Day 3: Lecce – Gallipoli (approx. 50km)
Ride along country roads between vines and olive trees to arrive in Copertino with its lovely castle. Continue to Nardò, that deserves a walk to the magnificent Baroque square and a stop to buy some wine. From here quiet roads will take you towards the coast, and past rocky and sandy beaches and small villages.
Day 4: Gallipoli – Salve (approx. 50km)
Ride along the edge of the Punta Pizzo Park and following the coastline, you pass Torre San Giovanni, a small harbour. The crystal-clear water will invite you to swim. Go inland to reach Salve, a pretty village set in the countryside amidst olive groves and native Mediterranean scrub.
Day 5: Salve – Leuca – Otranto (approx. 65km)
In Leuca join a boat trip to discover the many sea caves. Reaching Punta Ristola, you will be at the edge of the Salento peninsula, a small rocky crop, place of legends and numerous finds dating to the Neolithic Ages. Ride along gentle ups and downs to Otrano.
Day 6: Around Otranto (approx. 30km)
This little town is rich in history and stories, having been a connection point between the western and the eastern world. There are many magical places to explore in this area.
Day 7: Otranto – Lecce (approx. 55km)
Cycle between the two Alimini lakes before riding again along the coast. Continue up to Roca Vecchia, an important archaeological site, and then to the Natural WWF Park “Le Cesine”.
Day 8: Lecce
Visit the archaeological Museum Faggiano in the historic centre.

Note
: you must arrive at the start of the trip already a competent rider.
