HOT Bucket List: Sip Bordeaux in the Bordeaux region

This is the wine capital of France, the must-visit for wine lovers! Especially red wine lovers. A UNESCO World Heritage-site with the Stone Bridge’s 17 arches over the Garonne, the cobbled pedestrian lanes of the old town, the lovely riverside promenade, and an ideal base to get out into the wine regions.

4 reasons to put this experience on your Bucket List:
HOT Bucket icon Drink Bordeaux and discover the secrets of making these world-famous wines, and their classifications.
HOT Bucket icon Create your own wine blend.
HOT Bucket icon Wine tasting in Saint Emilion Village, this beautiful old town has quaint alleys and loads of wine shops with free wine tasting and is only a 35 minute train ride from Bordeaux.
HOT Bucket icon Explore the little villages in Medoc alongside the river and the surrounding Appelations which have their own unique wines due to differing soil, water, even culture.

Here are our must dos while there

Discover Bordeaux from the Garonne River
Cruise past UNESCO World Heritage-listed architecture and ancient buildings. As you glide from the city, passing under the imposing Pont d’Aquitaine bridge to wine producing countryside, your onboard guide will explain Bordeaux’s history and you’ll enjoy a wine-tasting session with a sommelier.
From $38 per adult (Wed-Sun)

Catch the little white “Vineyard Train”
This is the cutest way to see the rolling countryside covered in vines and chateaux in Saint Emilion. As well as learning about the wine classification, you also have the option to stop off at a Chateau for a tasting.

La Cite du Vin
On the banks of the Garonne River, we love this cultural hub that celebrates wine from all over the world including New Zealand. The architecture is stunning and the exhibits are interactive and interesting on all things wine. Topped off with a free glass of wine and a great view from the 8th floor.

Shop on Rue St Catherine
The longest pedestrianised street in Europe with The Grand Theatre at one end and lots of main street shops like Zara and H&M. The little streets between Gambetta Square and Rue St Catherine are full of lovely boutiques, jewellery stores, cafes and chocolate shops.

Savour delicious seafood and oysters
Near the white sand beaches of Arcachon Bay, hike up the highest sand dune in Europe, Pyla Dune, for spectacular views over the forest and Atlantic Ocean, before indulging in the Bay’s delicacies.
Tours from $125 per adult (Mon, Wed, Fri)

Stay in the heart of the city just off Rue St Catherine
Set in a 19th century building with a modern interior, the Quality Hotel Bordeaux Centre is one of our favourite 3-star hotels. You’re right amongst the action with lots of cafes, restaurants and of course the shops.
