Suggested Itinerary and places to visit:
DAY 1 – Collect your car at London Airport and head off through the beautiful English countryside. Visit Stonehenge on your way to stay in the Southampton area.
DAY 2 – Drive along the south coast passing Lulworth Cove, an almost circular bay on the ‘Jurassic Coast’. This area is an UNESCO World Heritage site due to the large volume of fossils and geological peculiarities. Stay in the Exeter area.
DAY 3 – Explore the many villages with their thatched cottages and cosy tea rooms on your way to the wild Dartmoor National Park. Stop for a Devon Cream Tea, visit the famous gardens – Eden Project or Lost Gardens of Heligan. Stay a couple of nights in the attractive seaside town of Falmouth.
DAY 4 – Spend today discovering Cornwall’s folklore, wonderful coastline, pretty fishing villages and open rolling countryside. Head for St Ives, an attractive harbour town on the north Cornish coast with pretty cottages, alleyways and the renowned Tate Art Gallery. Try a Cornish pasty – a local delicacy – in one of the many pasty shops. Continue along the coast to the most south westerly tip of England to stop at Land’s End and admire the wild coastal views. Drive back along the south Cornish coast to Marazion to see the famous St Michael’s Mount, located on a small island not far from the seashore and reachable by foot during low tide.
DAY 5 - Follow the scenic north coast of Devon and Cornwall. Stop to explore Padstow, a town famous for its food, especially fish & chips. Continue to Tintagel Castle where, according to legend, King Arthur was conceived. Take in the views and enjoy a bracing walk along the coastal path. Head inland to cross Bodmin Moor, visit the majestic Lanhydrock House, a manor house surrounded by beautifully maintained gardens. Stay a couple of nights in the Barnstaple area.
DAY 6 – Explore the Devon Coast heading west along the coast to Clovelly, a pretty fishing village clinging to the side of a cliff. You could also explore Exmoor National Park, famous for its ponies, dramatic moor scenery and seaside towns.
DAY 7 – Cross into Somerset where you drive through Britain’s biggest gorge with stunning views and dramatic cliffs. Cheddar Gorge is known for its cheese which is stored in some of the many caves in the area, stop in the village of Cheddar to try some of the cheese. Close by is Glastonbury, a town known for its large music festival, but it also has a long and fascinating history, full of myths and legends. The area of Somerset is known for its cider production, and you can choose to experience the production first hand at a Cider Farm. Travel on to Bath, one of the finest cities in Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage site, visit the Roman Baths, a source of spring water for over 2000 years.
DAY 8 – Drive through Lacock, a very picturesque village with a pretty abbey which featured in many scenes during the first two Harry Potter films as Hogwarts School and has also been a film set for some of Jane Austen’s novels. Continue through the Cotswolds, a charming region with its soft rolling hills, picturesque villages of honey-coloured stone cottages, medieval churches and green fields surrounded by old stone walls. Stop off in Castle Combe, one of the prettiest villages in England before dropping your car back to the airport.
