Itinerary Details
Day 1: Cuzco - Andenes
Depart early morning from Cuzco by bus for a scenic four hour drive through towns of the Inca Empire and across the Apurimac River to the trek starting point at Soraypampa at 3,800m. You’ll have breakfast and then the real trekking begins with ascent and descent, magnificent views of the south face of Salkantay Mountain at 6,271m and the snow-capped peaks of the Vilcabamba Range. At times walking beside the Salkantay glacier, your high point is 4,600m at Abra Huayracmachay and down to your camp at Andenes at 3500m.

Day 2: Andenes - Lucmabamba
After yesterday’s highs another full day but a far easier trek descending down to walk alongside the Salkantay River, passing waterfalls and into cloud forest. Through small towns, providing insight into Andean mountain life, the river merges into the Santa Teresa River a good spot to rest. You continue on passing more waterfalls and past lush plantations of coffee, banana and avocado, through the bustling town of La Playa and to your second camp at Lucmabamba at 2,100m and a well-earned beer or glass of wine.

Day 3: Lucmabamba - Aguas Calientes
After breakfast, and another reason this trek is such a great choice, you trek up to El Mirador (2860m), from here there is an exceptional view of the Lost City of the Incas, the legendary Machu Picchu. You’ll head down to another lookout point above Llactapata at 2650m to enjoy lunch with views of Machu Picchu and Salkantay Mountain. After a good rest another bonus is a visit to Llactapata Ruins and descend to the Aobamba River to board a train that takes you to Aguas Calientes.

Day 4: Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu - Cuzco
Wake up early to take a bus to Machu Picchu for a guided tour of the Inca citadel. You’ll also have free time to soak up the site. In the afternoon return to Aguas Calientes and take the train back to Cuzco arriving early evening.

Departures: Cuzco / Set departures (Mar-Dec)

Note: The Salkantay Trek is closed during January & February (rainy season).
