DAY 2: MONDAY 15 MARCH - HOKIANGA
Following a continental breakfast this morning, depart Auckland and travel north stopping first in the quaint river side settlement of Warkworth. From Warkworth continue north and stop at the Kauri Museum at Matakohe. The award-winning Kauri Museum tells the story of the kauri tree and the people who developed industries to harvest the rich resources of our ancient kauri forests. The unparalleled kauri timber and magnificent juvenile amber (kauri gum) built our nation. Experience the kauri story of the past, understand its present and be part of the kauri tree’s future. After leaving the museum the road north takes us through the Waipoua Forest. The Waipoua and the adjoining Mataraua and Waima, make up the largest remaining tract of native forest in Northland. It is home to the famous lord of the forest – Tane Mahuta, a kauri tree estimated to be between 1250 and 2500 years old. The final destination today is Omapare on the edge of the Hokianga Harbour. Accommodation is provided by the Copthorne Hotel Hokianga which offers view across the harbour to towering coastal sand dunes. Following the included dinner tonight at the hotel you will join the Twilight Encounter with Footprints Waipoua. You will be taken into the Waipoua forest and introduced to the oldest and largest known kauri trees in the world. Experience the deep spiritual respect that Maori have for the giant kauri trees during your tour as your local Maori guide shares with you thought provoking information, humorous banter, stories and legends.
DAY 3: TUESDAY 16 MARCH - PAIHIA
After breakfast this morning travel back across to the east coast of Northland. Visit Kerikeri and the famous Stone Store, one of New Zealand’s oldest buildings dating back to 1832. Then venture to Waitangi and visit the Treaty grounds and museum – location of the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840.
