  This evening we depart Christchurch for Dubai on Emirates.
Sat 07 Dec Dubai
  Welcome to amazing Dubai. On arrival we will be met and transferred to our hotel right in the heart of the city. Time at leisure this afternoon to relax or perhaps experience the amazing Dubai Mall – the 2nd largest shopping mall in the world. (B,D)
Sun 08 Dec Dubai 
  Be fascinated by Dubai’s rich history and tradition on our sightseeing tour that includes the Al Fahidi Cultural Neighbourhood, and the Gold and Spice Souks. We also explore the fantastic Dubai Museum to learn about times gone by, and then cross the Dubai Creek in a traditional abra (water taxi). (B, D)
Mon 09 Dec Dubai – Prague, Czech Republic
  This morning we fly to beautiful Prague, capital of the Czech Republic. This fascinating city straddles the Vltava River with domes, cupolas, spires, and pinnacles highlighting its skyline. We transfer to our hotel in the heart of the city, and early evening we experience the beautiful Prague Christmas Markets. (B, D)
Tue 10 Dec Prague
  Prague is a 1,200-year-old city preserved in time, and, unlike other Central European capitals, it was not bombed during the 20th-century wars. We enjoy an orientation tour of its best-known treasures, such as the Old Town’s Astronomical Clock, built in 1410 and once the envy of all of Europe, Hradcany Castle Grounds, St. Vitus Cathedral, and the Charles Bridge, the oldest bridge in Prague. We browse the wonderful Christmas Markets where rows of brightly decorated wooden huts sell Christmas tree ornaments, wooden toys and Czech handicrafts. (B, D)
Wed 11 Dec Prague – Nuremburg, Germany (Embarkation)
  A leisurely morning, then after lunch we depart our hotel and drive to Nuremberg where our Avalon Artistry River Cruise Ship is docked and waiting. Before dinner we meet our crew for a Welcome Reception. (B, L, D)
Thu 12 Dec Roth – Nuremberg Excursion
  We dock in the Bavarian town of Roth for a day of fascinating excursions to Nuremburg, with a choice of a tour of its medieval architecture, gilded fountain, gothic cathedral, and Kaiserburg Castle, or a tour of the historic Nuremberg Rally Grounds-used by the Third Reich. And of course the Old Town will be illuminated with beautiful festive lights and decorations with its Christmas Market being one of the most famous in the world. We will find dozens of stalls offering traditional wares including Nuremburg Lebkuchen (spicy gingerbread). (B,L,D)
Fri 13 Dec Regensburg
  We arrive in the lovely Bavarian city of Regensburg today which dates back to the time of the Celts around 500 BC and is one of Germany’s best preserved medieval cities. Established during the Holy Roman Empire and the only German city not bombed during WWII, Regensburg has at least 1,300 listed buildings of historic interest. Architectural highlights of our guided walk include the Old Town Hall built in the 13th century, and Porta Pretoria, gates to an ancient Roman fort built in 179 AD. We wander through the city’s lanes and alleys to discover the many mansions with high towers that wealthy families built to emphasize their status and wealth during the Middle Ages. We also walk across the 12th-century Steinerne Brücke (Stone Bridge), the oldest of its kind in Germany, and grab a beer and included snack at the Historische Wurstküche (Old Sausage Kitchen), one of Germany’s oldest restaurants. During our free time we explore the Christmas Market where the tempting aromas of mulled wine, sweet roasted almonds, sausages, and gingerbread create an unforgettable atmosphere. (B, L, D)
Sat 14 Dec Passau
  This morning, we dock in Passau which is uniquely located where the Inn, Ilz, and Danube Rivers converge, Passau is a maze of narrow cobblestone streets lined with beautiful patrician houses and dominated by St. Stephen’s Cathedral, a masterpiece of Italian baroque 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 architecture. We take in the highlights on the included guided walk, or alternatively you might like to join the full-day optional excursion to Salzburg to see some of the sites from The Sound of Music, and learn how the Austrians celebrate Christmas. Sun 15 Dec Melk – Wachau Valley - Vienna
  This morning we enjoy an included guided visit of Melk’s magnificent 11th-century Benedictine Abbey, one of Europe’s largest monasteries. The abbey houses an ornate library with over 80,000 printed books and 2,000 manuscripts, and you will be captivated by the splendor of the church with its frescoed ceilings, stunning high altar, marble statues, and 210-foot-high cupola. The view from the terrace over the Danube and surrounding countryside is breath-taking! Then, we cruise through the picturesque Wachau Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We pass the magnificent baroque Stiftskirche with its blue façade, the landmark of the town of Dürnstein, before arriving in Vienna this evening. Known as the ‘City of Music,’ it inspired the creative genius of Mozart, Beethoven, and Strauss. An optional concert is available tonight. (B, L D)
Mon 16 Dec Vienna
  Once the centre of the mighty Habsburg Empire, Austria’s magical capital on the blue Danube is a showcase of gilded architecture. This is home to the lavish Hofburg Imperial Palace complex with its Vienna Boys’ Choir and dazzling Lipizzaner stallions; the neo-renaissance Vienna Opera House; and awe-inspiring St. Stephen’s Cathedral—plus, countless other sights we will see on our included city tour. Or perhaps enjoy instead a very special Culinary Tour at the Viennese Christmas Markets, where we can taste all the best flavours that Austria offers during this time of the year. Visit the Christmas Market in the town centre, and enjoy a piece of decadent Sachertorte or Apfelstrudel in one of the classic Viennese coffee houses, historic institutions that helped shape Viennese culture. Tue 17 Dec Budapest, Hungary
  Spanning the banks of the Danube, Budapest is one of Eastern Europe’s liveliest cities, and one of Europe’s greatest Christmas Market destinations. Whether you’re seeing the sights, shopping for Christmas handcrafts, or basking in the coffee house culture over a rich cream cake in the renowned Gerbeaud Café, Budapest’s unique energy is fantastic. On our guided sightseeing tour we see Heroes’ Square as well as the massive hilltop castle complex with its remarkable Fishermen’s Bastion and 11th-century Matthias Church, the coronation spot of several Hungarian monarchs. Christmas time is stunning in Budapest with over 100 stalls set up around the Christmas Tree on the plaza in front of the Gerbequd Café. (B L, D)

  We disembark the Avalon Artistry this morning, and transfer to our hotel for a day of leisure, and a final opportunity to enjoy the magnificent Budapest Christmas Markets. (B, D)
