Why We Love It

❤ The Wildlife Conservation Society is working to develop a model of community conservation that trains and empowers Rwandan nationals to undertake conservation research and management to create the next generation of environmental leadership.

❤ This experience offers a behindthe-scenes look at the gorilla research and conservation activities of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International. The tour is led by a senior gorilla expert, who will explain the content of the exhibit and will lead guests to the lab areas, where visitors can meet with scientists at work.

❤ The Mountain Gorilla Veterinary Project puts a huge effort into caring for these critically endangered primates. Spend time with the staff learning how the gorillas are monitored, how lifesaving medical care is provided; how health studies are conducted and how veterinary medicine and ecosystem health is taught.


ITINERARY

Day 1: KIGALI

On arrival at Kigali International Airport, we will be welcomed by your guide who will transfer us to the hotel and assist with check in. The rest of the day is at leisure, or if your flight schedule permits you may be interested in an optional City and Genocide Museum Tour.


Day 2: KIGALI - NYUNGWE NATIONAL PARK

After breakfast, drive to Butare, the cultural heart of Rwanda and home to the former Mwami Palace (King’s Palace). Here we will visit the Butare National Museum - a fascinating ethnographic museum containing items of traditional clothing, maps, photographs and historical artefacts. After lunch at a local restaurant in Butare, we will continue to Nyungwe National Park. (B)(L)(D)




Day 3: NYUNGWE NATIONAL PARK

After breakfast, we drive to nearby Cyamudongo Forest for a thrilling hike in search of chimpanzee communities. The Rwandan chimpanzee population is thought to consist of approximately 400-500 individuals, confined to Nyungwe National Park, including a small community in the Cyamudongo Forest. Prepare to hear these excitable primates before you see them, as their pant-hoots travel through the deep forest. During our hike you may also spot migratory birdlife including the Ross’s turaco, grey-cheeked hornbill, red-breasted sparrow hawk and regal sunbird.



We will enjoy lunch at the lodge and then return to the park office for a visit to the Wildlife Conservation Society for a brief on the organisation’s efforts in engaging the local community to participate in conservation research managing the forest. (B)(L)(D)



Day 4: NYUNGWE NATIONAL PARK - VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK

We will check out of the hotel after breakfast and begin the 7-hour journey to Volcanoes National Park, passing through lush countryside and beautiful terraced hillsides. On the drive we will stop for a picnic lunch on the shores of Lake Kivu.

This afternoon you will visit the Dian Fossey Research Centre for a behind the scenes tour and presentation on the conservation efforts undertaken by the organisation. (B)(L)(D)




Day 5: VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK

Spend the next two days exploring the Okavango Delta in depth.

Today we have the rare opportunity to observe the famous Rwandan mountain gorillas. Tracking the gorillas through the forested slopes of the Virungas is a magical experience. Once located, spend an hour with gorillas as you observe these majestic animals and return to base in time for a late lunch.



This afternoon enjoy a visit with the Gorilla Doctors to learn about the incredible work being time to save the species, one gorilla at a time. (B)(L)(D)




Day 6: VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK - AKAGERA NATIONAL PARK

After breakfast we depart with a packed lunches and drive to the Akagera National Park where we will be met by Magashi Camp vehicles for the transfer to the camp.

Akagera is set at a relatively low altitude on the border with Tanzania and scenically dominated by a labyrinth of swamps and lakes that follow the meandering course of the Akagera River. (B)(L)(D)




Day 7: AKAGERA NATIONAL PARK

Today we will spend the day exploring Akagera National park with morning and afternoon game activities. Hugging the border with Tanzania, the park has a variety of landscapes - creating a thriving habitat for zebra, giraffe, lion, elephant, hippo and myriad birds. (B) (L)(D)

Day 8: AKAGERA NATIONAL PARK KIGALI
