HOT Bucket List: Tulip Fields in the Netherlands

The Dutch countryside bursts into colour mid April to mid May, as rows and rows of tulips spring up transforming the landscape into a colourful patchwork.  This is a great time to appreciate the vibrant beauty of the fields and the excitement at the flower auctions.

4 reasons to put this experience on your Bucket List:
HOT Bucket iconVisit Keukenhof, the world’s largest flower garden for a magical memory. 15 kilometres of footpaths and 32 hectares of gardens, where millions of colourful bulbs are planted each year.
HOT Bucket iconThe huge flower parade at Keukenhof on 13 April 2019 has colourful floats covered in tulips, hyacinths and daffodils.
HOT Bucket iconUnique, highly anticipated experience as the flowers only bloom once a year for about 8 weeks and timing depends heavily on weather conditions.
HOT Bucket iconFeel like you’re strolling through a painting – wander along winding paths lined with bright blossoming tulips, narcissis, bluebells, settle beside a shady brook with a picnic lunch.

Here are our must do’s while there:
Visit the famous Keukenhof Gardens - driving through the countryside from Amsterdam you’ll see the flower fields in full bloom and hear about the history of the land before arriving at the Gardens and spending a few hours marvelling at the beauty. Tulips, hyacinths, daffodils, and other spring bulbs carpet the grounds. Stroll through the English landscape garden, the Japanese country garden, and the historical garden.
5 hour tour from $102 per person

Totally immerse yourself in all things iconically Dutch by combining a morning visit to Keukenhof Gardens with a trip to Zaanse Schans where you will see working windmills and shops dating back to the 18th and 19th century, taste delicious Dutch cheese and see a wooden shoemaker at work.
8-9 hour tour from $149 per person

Buy a bouquet or bulbs – dating back to 1862, the flower market in Amsterdam is the only floating flower market in the world. The flower stalls are on houseboats, and fragrance along with the sight is gorgeous.

Go tulip spotting - The Tulip Festival takes place in 85 locations across Amsterdam, public spaces, gardens in museums and hotels and in the surrounding districts. Stroll or cycle through the streets and parks where the colour explodes either out of the ground or from planter boxes at locations like the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, Vondelpark, Rembrandtplein and EYE Filmmuseum.

Learn about this delicate flower -  how it has ignited passion and envy over the centuries, at the Amsterdam Tulip Museum in Jordaan. A must buy is the Iamsterdam City Card which gives you free entrance to the museum as well as unlimited free public transport, a free canal cruise and discounts on attractions and restaurants, and free entry to another 43 museums.
