Beautiful Sicily is a treasure trove of Roman and Greek ruins, medieval villages, incredible architecture and dramatic landscape. Just as dramatic is the long, complicated history – the mafia originated here, the Romans ruled, the Byzantines, the Arabs, the Normans - all make for a truly unique culture.
The old town has a 3000 year old history with the slightly chaotic streets showing the architectural marks of the many invaders. Wander through the Ballaro Market, a souk-like market with Moorish influences, it’s vibrant and one of the best places to eat.
Once a small fishing village, now with a sandy beach and medieval alleys filled with shops and restaurants, has become a popular seaside resort. Climb to the top of La Rocca di Cefalu for fabulous views.
Built high on the cliffs, the views are incredible of the sea and the Etna volcano. The centre is pedestrian only and the main street, Corso Umberto, is packed with shops from luxury boutiques to souvenirs. The most famous monument here is the Greek Theatre from the 3rd century BC.
One of Sicily’s main attractions, and an unforgettable experience to go on the volcano. Climb up and see the crater with a guide. Or enjoy viewpoints from Catania, the ideal starting point to get to the volcano and nicknamed the black city because the buildings built in lava stone.
In Syracuse you’ll find most of the main archaeological sites in the old town on Ortiga Island. Cross the bridge to wander around the 2500 years of history, past Baroque and medieval palaces, churches and the 6th BC temple of Apollo. Pick up sausages and Sicilian cheese from the market and head to the harbour to enjoy the laidback Sicilian life.
