Nice is a hub of year-round liveliness. The mainly pedestrianised centre is easily walkable, with busy French bistros spilling from its lanes. Discover the palm-lined promenade by bike or Segway, or climb Castle Hill for the best views of the sea, city and port. Vieux Nice (the Old Town) is bursting with markets, restaurants and bars, while Rue Bonaparte makes for a nice distraction with its boutiques and delicious patisseries, as well as the former dwellings of a young Napoléon.
Soak up the French Riviera at its best while wandering along the promenade. Great for people watching. Just beware for learners on rollerblades and small dogs!
There are only a few sections of wall of the ancient castle remaining but there is an lovely park and the view over Nice, the Bay of Angels and the port from the top is well worth the walk up the zig zag steps. There is also a small elevator that goes to the top.
If you’ve got your own wheels then the drive along the coast between Cannes and Menton is fabulous. Don’t miss the Cap d’Antibes, dotted with impressive villas.
This is a gorgeous baroque square in the old town that is the setting for a great flower and vege market. Surrounded with cafés and restaurants, it is a really vibrant spot for lunch.
For a peaceful time out, you can walk or bus up to these wonderful gardens. Enjoy the views over Nice and the beautiful flower beds, and there is also a monastery with an attached church.
