Fiji North

Fiji North

The pace of life in Fiji is seldom hectic, but in the northern islands of Vanua Levu and Taveuni, you’ll find that life becomes even more relaxed. These islands are just an hour’s flight from Nadi or Suva, but as you explore the shops and historic waterfront of Savusavu, you’ll feel as though you’ve taken a trip back in time.

Fiji’s Northern area has so much on offer from dolphin watching, the most incredible diving and don’t miss a visit to Wasali Nature Reserve - an untouched rainforest with hiking trails leading to spectacular views in Savusavu – a highlight for sure!

The region is also the home of Fiji’s eco-tourism movement, which means you’ll find small resorts that endeavour to combine tranquillity and luxury with ecological values. From the way the resorts are constructed to the educational nature of their kids clubs, the whole family will come away with a new appreciation for this amazing environment, and the marine sanctuaries that have been established ensure that the snorkelling and diving is just as fabulous as the fishing.

SOME THINGS TO SEE AND DO IN FIJI NORTH

Savusavu Town SAVUSAVU TOWN

Not too long ago Savusavu was a small and dusty peninsular town with fabulous views across the bay. The views haven’t changed but in recent years the population has grown and now the main street has good restaurants, lively bars and well stocked shops. Yachties continue to arrive with numbers outgrowing moorings. (Image: ©Captain Cook Cruises)

Cruising CRUISING

Experience remote Northern Fiji with Captain Cook Cruises on their 7 night Colonial Cruise. Explore picture perfect coral cays and enjoy swimming, snorkelling or scuba diving at a range of amazing spots such as Bouma, Savusavu Bay, Whispering Tide and Nananu-I-Ra.

Diving DIVING

Fiji’s North is world-renowned among divers and offers an endless variety of dive sites to suit all tastes and levels of experience. As a rule, while you can dive year round, the best diving is from May through to October. Visibility is not as good in January and February due to plankton blooms and northerly winds. With sites like the 32km long Rainbow Reef, The Great White Wall, the Zoo and Vuna Reef, it’s not hard to see why this area is a mecca for divers. (Image: ©Paradise Tavenui)

Birdwatching BIRD WATCHING

Taveuni is one of Fiji’s best locations for bird watching, with over 100 species of birds to be found here. Try Des Voeux Peak at dawn for a chance to see the rare orange dove and silktail. Along the Lavena Coastal Walk keep an eye peeled for parrots, flame doves, the Fiji goshawk and wattle honeyeater.

Fishing FISHING

Fiji’s North has some of the best fishing spots in the South Pacific. The water around Savusavu in particular have abundant marlin, wahoo, tuna and other game fish. Sports fishing is popular in the region with a number of good charter boat operators to take you out amongst the serious fish. (Image: ©Matangi Private Island Resort)

Bouma BOUMA NATIONAL HERITAGE PARK

Coast and forest hiking and three famous waterfalls. If hiking sounds too hard, you can still see the first and best of the falls; it’s just a stroll from the visitor centre. Fitness fanatics can tackle the full-day Vidawa Rainforest trail. (Image: ©Captain Cook Cruises)

Waitavala Water Slide WAITAVALA WATER SLIDE

A must-do experience while in Taveuni. Take a short walk through the forest and follow the lead of the village kids to this natural fun park. You can shoot down the cascading water on a natural rock slide and splash into the pool at the bottom. Pack your sense of adventure and give it a go!
