Perth

A lot of Perth’s magnetism is probably to do with the laidback atmosphere the city exudes. The warm sunny climate, picturesque location on the banks of the Swan River, and rich café culture all lend themselves to a holiday that’s all about slowing down and catching your breath.

Fremantle is one of the best known destinations in the area immediately surrounding Perth. This historic seaport, which has become a haven for artists, writers and musicians, is a great place to spend a few hours or a few days. Act like a local and potter through the Fremantle markets, enjoy some street food at an outdoor food market and head down to one of the great micro breweries for a popular Sunday session.

Head to Rottnest Island, just 19km off the coast of Perth, for a casual atmosphere, picturesque scenery and some of Australia’s fi nest beaches and bays. Having a photo taken with the infamous Quokkas is an absolute must whilst on the island.

If you are looking for great food and wine, look no further than Swan Valley, only 25 minutes east of Perth. Home to over 150 places to wine and dine, including award winning wineries, microbreweries and distilleries.

Further afi eld there’s an array of different experiences within a two hour drive. There are stunning beaches like Swanbourne, Cottesloe, Scarborough and Sorrento, or if you’re into food and wine, there are plenty of wineries and piles of fresh seafood. If you prefer to get active there’s surfi ng, golf courses, beautiful walking and cycling tracks or rivers to explore.

Quokkas SEE QUOKKAS ON ROTTNEST ISLAND

Describing them is a bit hard because they somewhat resemble a cat sized rat. The island is one of the few places these wee guys survive today, and you’ll have no problem spotting them as they laze in the gardens or on the grass under the shade of a trees. While you’re not allowed to handle them, they are very tame and inquisitive so they’ll most probably come over to check you out.

Downtown Perth DOWNTOWN PERTH

Parks have been established along the shore of the river, perfect for your morning walks or maybe a picnic down by the Bell Tower, one of the city's favourite attractions. For a spot of shopping, head for Murray and Hay Streets, both of which are pedestrianized. Along here you’ll find all the major retail players, as well as boutique Perth stores, particularly in the cute arcades that run through the surrounding buildings. Ladies will want to check out King Street too, known for its high end fashion boutiques.
Kings Park KINGS PARK BOTANICAL GARDEN

If you’re in need for a bit of a break, head west to Kings Park. At over 400 acres, it’s one of the largest inner city parks in the world, filled with many walkways and offering amazing views back over the Perth skyline. Throughout the park you’ll find many pieces of public art and the botanic gardens, it’s particularly good to visit in spring when Western Australia’s wildflowers come out to bloom.

Beaches PERTH'S BEACHSIDE SUBURBS

The city boasts 19 in the city itself, but the coastline is lined with many beaches for miles around. The most popular spot is scenic Cottesloe Beach. The beautiful white sandy beach and crystal clear waters have propelled this beach to icon status amongst the locals. It’s the perfect spot to cool off with a swim, and grab some fish and chips for a picnic under the trees on the foreshore lawns. Scarborough Beach is another popular swimming beach, and even has a decent swell for the surfers.

Fremantle FREMANTLE

This historic suburb is the oldest part of Perth thanks to the adjacent port. Many of the historic buildings and shipping warehouses have thankfully been preserved and restored to their former glory. This is where all the cool kids hang, and the place to be seen trying one of the suburb’s ever expanding craft breweries, such as the famous Little Creatures Brewery. History buffs will love the WA Maritime Museum which holds the America’s Cup winning Australia II, as well as an old Australian Navy submarine. The Perth Mint is another favourite attraction, one of only two working mints left in the country.
