Relatively a small country, Cambodia for some is only visited to experience the world-famous temples of Angkor, however the country offers more than meets the eye.
The Khmers have bee n to hell and back, struggling through years of poverty and bloodshed, most recently from the notorious Khmer Rouge – but of late, the country has risen to a destination which should be a must visit on any Asia holiday plans.
The largest city in Cambodia is a mix of traditional and French architecture. After more than its fair share of rough times over the years, it is now a drawcard for those interested in war history. Monuments such as the Silver Pagoda, with over 5000 silver tiles, and the Buddhist temple of Wat Phnom are also well worth visit. Explore the dome-shaped Central Market, and use your bartering skills.
Attracting the most visitors of anywhere in Cambodia, and this is largely due to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Angkor Wat. Elsewhere in the area, be adventurous and go ziplining or quad biking, or enjoy a relaxing bike ride around the countryside. Don’t leave town without visiting Pub Street, as the name suggests, is home to a plethora of pubs on a pedestrian only street.
Comparative to Machu Picchu and the Pyramids of Giza, this collection of temples is a sight to behold. Explore this impressive area with a guide, there is so much to know! Covering over 400 square kilometres, including forests, the ancient stone city is a masterpiece. The most famous is Angkor Wat, even appearing on the nations flag. This is a must-visit when in Cambodia.
Head to the southern coast and be blessed with seaside towns and lush countryside. It is a modern place compared to other Cambodian spots, with many casinos as well as many shops and eateries. You will still be able to find a beach to relax as well as a bar to visit at night. Partake in watersports, relax with a massage or explore the countryside.
