Top 6 winter events on the Sunshine Coast in 2017

story by: Anna Sarjeant

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but winter's coming. But with Aussie’s Sunshine Coast just a four hour flight away, the name really does suggest you should go there for some mid-winter rays. Better still, they have a full calendar of fun-filled events.

Noosa Food and Wine Festival (18 - 21 may 2017)
Eating and drinking in Australia is always a pleasure because they do a damn fine job at keeping taste buds titillated. So where better to celebrate all things flavoursome, than the Noosa Food and Wine Festival. This isn’t your standard foodie and wine show, this one’s really quite unique. From food trails and farm tours to breakfast on the beach and over 50 available winemakers, the set-up is as inventive as the food on your plate. Watch festival chefs dual it out in the surf before serving (or should that be SURFing) a casual beachfront breakfast by the sea, or partake in a Champagne masterclass - tasting five different Champagnes to learn how the food eat will changes the taste of the bubbles. Other highlights include lunch on Hastings Street, which is closed to traffic for one afternoon so everyone can enjoy alfresco dining. For the active holidaymaker, there are Pilates classes followed by breakfast on the beach, and for those with a penchant for a party, the opening night cocktail party takes place on the shore; with beach tipis and a sunset backdrop.

Queensland Garden Expo - Nambour Showgrounds (7 - 9 July 2017)
Not just for green-thumbs, the Queensland Garden Expo is a 3 day celebration of plants, plants and more plants! Visit the ‘Giant Kitchen Garden’ which is a totally organic food court, get some great tips on turning your fresh grown produce into delicious meals at ‘Gardeners and Gourmets’ workshop and attend the onsite Plant Clinic to get some inspiration for your next bumper crop.

Noosa Long Weekend Festival (21 - 30 July 2017)
It’s a long weekend that turns into ten full days of fun. The Noosa Long Weekend Festival at Noosa Heads boasts a variety of events including music, theatre, food and art. Suitable for the entire family, it all kicks off with the Hastings Street Carnivale Parade. An array of jostling street performers, musicians and merry-makers shimmy down the strip. Look out for jugglers and circus stars all heading to Noosa Beach where the festivities continue.

Gympie Music Muster - Amamoor State Forest (24 Aug – 27 Aug 2017)
You know what they say - "You must do the Muster" and by that, they mean the Gympie Music Muster, one of Australia’s largest outdoor festivals and a celebration of some of the nation’s finest country music talent.

A festival thirty five years in the making, country might not be new to the music scene but it’s only in recent years, with the likes of Mumford & Sons strumming their banjos, that folk music has really been put back on the map. And with the Gympie Music Muster showcasing an eclectic mix of folk, bluegrass, balladeers, the gospel, blues and bush poetry, it’s guaranteed to put a tap back in your shoes too.

Held across eight venues and interspersed with multiple bars, festival-goers camp within the stunning Amamoor Creek State Forest Park, facilitated by decent camping facilities, plenty of hot showers and bathrooms. You’ll love the camaraderie between revellers, as well as the addictive smell of campfire cooking, sizzling snags and the non-stop thud of a folksy drum.

Wanderlust Sunshine Coast - Novotel Twin Waters (19 - 22 October 2017)

With healthy cuisine served throughout the festival and the chance to make hundreds of like-minded friends, you might leave with an inner sense of Zen, you might leave with a new talent for doing the splits on a surfboar.
