NATIONAL MUSEUM OF AUSTRALIA
If you only go to one museum in Canberra, make it this one. Once you’ve been wowed by the impressive architecture outside, spend hours learning all about Australia’s history inside. There’s a celebrated Aboriginal display, some of which has been loaned from the British Museum! Kids will love the dinosaur section, and the array of weird and wonderful creatures in the animal section will impress everyone. Other significant pieces include the prototype for the first ever Holden car, and the preserved heart of Phar Lap, that horse of ours that Aussie loves to claim.
NATIONAL GALLERY OF AUSTRALIA
With over 160,000 pieces, the National Gallery is the largest art museum in Australia. Collections include Aboriginal art, photography, sculptures and of course, artwork by famous Australian and international artists. Names include Tom Roberts and Russell Drysdale from Australia, as well as Cezanne, Monet, Picasso, Warhol and Matisse. And if that’s not enough art for you, there’s also the National Portrait Gallery.
CANBERRA DEEP SPACE COMMUNICATION COMPLEX
For something a little ‘out of this world’, head 45 minutes out of the city to Tidbinbilla Valley where you’ll find the Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex. The visitors centre has various displays including models, astronaut food, and even a piece of the moon. The working complex is also home to three massive satellite dishes which cooperate with NASA missions.
AUSTRALIAN WAR MEMORIAL
Probably the most popular attraction in all of Canberra is the Australian War Memorial. The impressive buildings hold all sorts of info on not only each Australia has participated in, but also each and every battle that Australia was involved in. Of course, there’s a significant Anzac exhibit too.
See the Aussie politicians in action on a guided tour of the Parliament House. See the House of Representatives, the Senate, and visit the main chambers during Question Time. The building also houses many significant documents and pieces of art.
