The Best of Portugal & Spain in One Awesome Self-Drive

story by: Anna Sarjeant

Ideal Length: 14 days

Best for: Non-stop culture seekers who love a packed agenda.

Cross borders in Spain and Portugal; soaking up the best of two culturally-rich nations. Granada makes an ideal starting point. A former Moorish City, the contradictions between grand and gritty are startling, with the formidable Alhambra Palace sitting aside pockets of scruffiness and graffiti stained lanes. Dip south into Gibraltar, a nation that tickles the tip of Africa, its resolutely British vibe will confuse and delight. You’re still in Spain, but pubs abound and an old-age Britishness prevails.

Seville, the capital of Andalucía boasts cobbled streets and pretty tiled patios. Try tapas in the Santa Cruz quarter or head to a tablao for a Flamenco show. From Seville, nip into Portugal and discover the little town of Vila Viçosa which is defined by its impressive palace and grand open square. Then it’s onto Lisbon for Gothic cathedrals and monasteries, as well as delicious cuisine found in quaint backstreets brasseries. En-route to Lisbon, you’ll come across any number of charming towns, medieval villages and delightful seaside resorts.

HOT tip: In Spain, if you need to wear glasses you’re required to carry an extra pair when driving.
