Where are the Gold Coast's best theme park rides?

story by: Tom Ricketts

THE GIANT DROP
When this ride opened at Dreamworld in 1999 it immediately went into the Guinness Book of Records as the world’s tallest vertical freefall ride. It towers 119 metres above the themepark and when up the top, there’s some pretty impressive views. However you’ll be far too fear stricken to notice that as you plummet 135kmph towards the ground. The marketing slogan for this ride is to ‘take some spare underwear’, and you might just have to.

THE CLAW
Themed to look like a rampaging velociraptor, the Claw certainly does strike fear into the hearts of those who see it at Dreamworld. A giant pendulum like device swings riders around and around at up to 75kmph. If that’s not terrifying enough, your seats also twist 360 degrees as you’re flying around in circles. This one is not safe for pukers.

ARKHAM ASYLUM
On this Batman themed ride at Movie World you’re actually strapped into a harness that’s attached to the ride above you, essentially leaving you and your legs hanging out the bottom. You’re then whipped along the tracks and into stomach churning loops at 85kmph where you’ll pull 4.2G’s!

THE BLACKHOLE
Most of us probably aren’t too scared of hydroslides these days, but this isn’t your average hydroslide. At Wet'n'Wild the screams of riders ahead of you fills your ears as you prepare to push off. Then as you hurtle down the slide at 40kmph you’re suddenly aware it’s pitch black… and you have absolutely no idea where the next turn is going to come from!

JET RESCUE
If you thought Sea World was just about viewing whales and dolphins, you were wrong. The Jet Rescue ride has you on a jetski resembling rollercoaster that shoots around the park at 70kmph. You’ll be pulling nearly 3G’s when you fly past the rockpools and approach the end of the ride… but what awaits you in the darkened blowhole cave…?

THE RIP
Named after the notorious rips that suck unwitting swimmers out to sea off our beaches, this White Water World ride aims to replicate the full fury of Mother Nature. You’ll launch from a 16 metre tower into 12 metres of pitch black horror before you’re blasted into a massive menacing whirlpool. Swirl around and around the funnel before you’re sent flying like a champagne cork into a plunge pool below.
