8 glorious Queensland pool bars

story by: Tom Ricketts

Pool bars; they're quite possibly the best invention ever, but sadly they haven't quite taken off down our way like they have throughout Europe, North America and the Caribbean. However there are a precious few in Queensland, and here's where you'll find them...

QT Port Douglas
The QT brand of hotels are refreshingly different to your standard hotel chains. Their Port Douglas resort has an open air reception, moonlight cinema for 300 people, market like restaurant, and of course, an awesome pool bar. Relax with your cocktail on the pool island, or hitch a ride on one of their giant inflatable yellow ducks.

Surfers Paradise Marriott
These guys have what’s quite possibly the coolest pool in Australia, if not the world! The eight million dollar pool features a cascading waterfall, rock grottos, spas and waterslides. But that’s not all; the saltwater lagoon pool is also stocked with a colourful array of tropical fish! That’s right, you can get your reef snorkelling experience from the hotel pool. Plus they have a seasonal pool bar, of course!

Sheraton Mirage Gold Coast
Next up for the Gold Coast is the luxury Sheraton Mirage. Not only does this hotel have pool access rooms, but it has a pretty impressive pool bar surrounded by lounges and manicured lawns sweeping down to the famous golden sand beaches of the Gold Coast.

Daydream Island
The family friendly Daydream Island Resort and Spa sits on its own exclusive island in the beautiful Whitsunday’s. They have a huge range of facilities which just so happens to include their pool bar, Splashes. Beer, wine and cocktails are available, plus a range of drinks and food for the kiddies.

Fitzroy Island
Fitzroy Island Resort is one of the closest island resorts to Cairns, just a 45 minute trip by fast ferry. The tropical island has beautiful beaches, lush forests, a turtle sanctuary, and impressive pool complete with pool bar. Day trippers do visit the island, but the pool is strictly for resort guests only.

Novotel Cairns Oasis
They’ve certainly chosen the right word to describe their hotel, it’s an oasis in the middle of Cairns. Just a stones throw away from the city shops and waterfront, the Novotel is a big hotel with several wings built around a central pool and garden area. Rooms have either city views or pool/garden views. Tall palms rise from the gardens and tower past the hotel. In the middle, a large lagoon pool offers cool relief from the hot Tropical North Queensland sun. The poolside restaurant extends into the pool serving up beer, wine and cocktails to help keep you cool.

Mantra PortSea Port Douglas
Located just a couple of blocks from Port Douglas’s Four Mile Beach, the Mantra PortSea probably doesn’t need a pool. But nobody told them that, and so they built three! One’s for laps, another has hydroslides for the kids, and the last pool, a lagoon pool, has a wonderful shaded pool bar. The Port Douglas shops and restaurants are all just a 15 minute stroll away!

Sheraton Noosa
The Sheraton Noosa is somewhat of an institution in Noosa. It’s been there forever, but is still on top of its game and therefore one of the best hotels in town. Its location can’t be beaten either, right smack in the middle of Hastings Street, the main street of Noosa. The hotel surrounds the large pool complete with pool bar, or maybe you’ll just relax and take advantage of poolside service while sunbathing on the large two person cabanas.
