Top indoor and Outdoor Activities in LA

story by: House of Travel

Los Angeles boasts a plethora of activities for travellers to enjoy. Some of these are indoors, but don't feel as though you are cheated out of enjoying the California sunshine because, with a myriad of world-class museums, art galleries and enticing shopping malls to peruse, spending some time inside is sure to be a blast. Of course, Los Angeles has a wide array of picturesque outdoor sites to visit too, from beaches to the iconic Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Hold onto your horses (or should we say wings?) as we soar through the City of Angels on this whirlwind tour of the best indoor and outdoor activities to tick off your LA bucket list.

Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA)

It doesn't get much better for an art lover than LACMA. Chris Burden's iconic sculptural installation Urban Light is right at the entrance, impressing visitors with 202 cast-iron street lamps collected from around the city and arranged into a cool artwork that is excellent for a selfie. Thousands of people click a picture here to share on social media, so be sure to take your camera along. Once you go inside, though, flash photography is not allowed. You have three floors to explore, the walls adorned with paintings from great American and international artists.

Griffith Observatory

Head here just before the sun sets to gaze at the starry skies through the state-of-the-art telescopes here, or simply enjoy admiring the rotunda shaped Art Deco-era building. This structure has been a part of LA for nearly 100 years, and is a popular spot for tourists and locals in the evenings, according to Time Out. Be sure to spend some time inside the Samuel Oschin Planetarium inside the Griffith Observatory - the high tech displays here will dazzle you as brightly as stars themselves.

Getty Center

Don't leave LA without a trip to the Getty. It took 13 years to build this acropolis-like museum, dressed up with white metal-clad pavilions. You might be indoors, but the views from this hilltop museum looking out over the vast LA area are mesmerising. Browse both the permanent collection and temporary exhibitions before jetting off to the next splendid LA attraction.

Santa Monica Place or Beverly Center

Either one of these shopping giants will provide excellent retail therapy during your stay in LA. Santa Monica Place is near the Pier of the same name, so you can kill two birds with one stone and see both in the same day. Many restaurants mean you can spend the whole day unleashing you inner shopaholic and then dining in style, too. Beverly Center is your go-to for high end or designer shopping, and because it's just a stone's throw from Beverly Hills, you might even spot some celebrities.

Venice Beach

This is hands down one of the best places to flop and drop for the day, basking in the glow of the sun. Palm trees fringe the boardwalk, soft golden sands spread towards the cool ocean waves, and LA's hip, creative types flock here to enjoy the rays. Take some swimming gear and a beach towel and relax, or rent some roller skates and thunder down the wooden boardwalk - both equally appealing outdoor plans.

Hike to Hollywood sign

Wedged in the Santa Monica Mountains are a range of hiking trails taking you straight to this legendary icon. Hiking through Griffith Park will get you extremely close to the enormous sign, but you can also opt to embark on a longer hike to see the 13-metre long aluminium letters from above - as well as check out panoramic views of the entire city.

Walk of Fame

No list on top outdoor activities in LA would be complete without mentioning this walk. Find the stars of your favourite stars, place your palm or foot next to theirs, and record the momentous occasion with a photograph. Enjoy feeling like a celeb - you're in LA, after all!
