Where to Stay on Hamilton Island

story by: Tom Ricketts

Queensland’s Whitsunday Islands are an all around perfect island holiday destination. There are stunning reefs to dive and snorkel, a billion different water activities, restaurants galore, fabulous accommodations for all tastes, beautiful nature, golf and even a beach consistently voted as best in the world!

Central to the Whitsunday chain of islands is Hamilton Island. While not a huge island, it is the most developed and even has a small airport with regular jet connections to Cairns, Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne. About 1200 people live on the island permanently, and there’s probably that number again in tourists staying at the range of resorts available. And there really is a true range...

The ‘lead in’ option on Hamilton Island are the Palm Bungalows, set amongst tropical gardens and only a short stroll to the beach. Recently refurbished and with a small kitchenette, if you’re a couple looking for some privacy then these are a fantastic option for you.

Reef View Hotel offers hotel style rooms with many amenities. The major selling feature here is, because of its height, the rooms have stunning views over the sparkling Coral Sea and other Whitsunday islands. The rooms are generously sized too, a good option for both couples and families.

If you’re planning a long stay, or simply want all the comforts of home, then a Holiday Home could be for you. These are owned by people who live around the world and just rent out their home while they’re not enjoying their own holiday on the island. There’s a full range of options from one to five bedrooms, as well as facilities such as private pools, laundries and kitchen facilities. Star ratings range from three to five star, and locations vary from garden locations to beach front. With your accommodation comes a four person golf buggy, the main form of transportation on the island.

Set right on Catseye Beach, this is where you want to stay for a luxurious holiday. Each room has beautiful beach and ocean views, private terraces or balconies, and all the mod cons. Facilities include an infinity pool and a restaurant, both of which are exclusive to Beach Club guests. Service is important here, and pulled off perfectly. This little slice of paradise is adults only, and perfect for some rest and relaxation.

This is the crème de la crème of accommodation on the island, and we’re talking four figures a night. Hidden away on a secluded corner of the island, Qualia has its own private beach, two restaurants, a day spa, VIP chauffeur services, and everything else you would expect in a luxury lodge. The three room types all offer superb views over the Coral Sea with expansive balconies to soak in the sun, and some even come with their own infinity pool. A private golf buggy is yours if you feel compelled to leave the resort for a drive, but you probably won’t. It’s no wonder the resort was voted the Best Resort in the World by Conde Nast in 2012.
