Where Can I Take the Kids in Houston?

story by: House of Travel

As one of the United States' most vibrant, exciting cities, Houston is sure to delight and amaze each of its visitors in equal measure. Whether you're eight or 80, the city is replete with a whole host of things to see and do. In particular, children are very well catered for in Texas' biggest city, with zero chance that they will ever become bored, such is the wealth of entertainment on offer.

Here are just a few captivating trips of what you can treat your little ones to in Houston:

Houston Zoo

What better way to intrigue and educate your children in equal measure than by a trip to the zoo? Houston is lucky enough to be home to one of the best in the country, but this is so much more than your standard run-of-the-mill animal enclosure. This is because the zoo promotes a sense of appreciation and care for our furry and not-so-furry friends, meaning that your children will come away from the experience both amazed and more knowledgeable about the natural world around them. There are over 6,000 animals that call Houston Zoo home, each found in wonderful, spacious housing that allows them to roam about as they would in the wild. The zoo welcomes 1.84 million people through its doors each year, looking to watch the incredible giraffe feedings, experience rhinoceros encounters and the lion's pen. There are regular events, shows and demonstrations to add an even greater sense of discovery to proceedings - with Houston Zoo, one visit is never enough.

Brazos Bend State Park

A visit to Houston would not be complete without a visit to one of its countless parks, and the one at Brazos Bend represents the perfect opportunity for you to bond, have fun and interact with your children. This is because it offers a full range of activities that any family can take part in. Across its 5,000 acres, you'll find immersive, scenic cycling tracks, sapphire lakes stocked with fish just waiting to bite your bait, and bird watching huts. It's the perfect place to get back to nature, especially if you pitch up a tent and watch the sky turn an inky black, picking out the constellations of the twinkling stars. If you're a little worried about heading into the great outdoors, never fear, as you can still enjoy Brazos Bend State Park on a guided hike, meaning you'll be under the watchful eye of a seasoned tracker!

Houston Museum of Natural Science

Two of the coolest, most interesting things for children are the wonders of outer space and the story of the dinosaurs. At the Houston Museum of Natural Science, you can immerse yourself and your kids in both of these, and much, much more. There are a few better places in the United States to stare up at the stars than at the Houston Museum of Natural Science, and it's home to no less than two world-class satellite facilities. The George Observatory is one of the biggest telescopes in the country that can be used by the public, meaning that you can gaze upon Jupiter, Uranus and beyond with the greatest of ease. Your little ones will be sure to learn a great deal about the universe which surrounds us, firing up their imaginations and sparking their creativity. Sugar Land, though, is where your little ones will really find themselves in their element. Not only is it home to a complete skeleton of the most famous dinosaur of them all, Tyrannosaurus Rex, you can also fall into Houston's intergalactic flavour with a planetary experience at the Hall of Space Science. That's not the end of the excitement at Sugar Land, however - you'll also discover a salt water aquarium, a dig pit where you can hunt for bones, a children's art gallery, and a raft of other intriguing exhibitions.
