Touring Ireland by Luxury Train

story by: Tom Ricketts

Launching in July 2016, the Belmond Grand Hibernian is going to take rail touring around Ireland to a new level. Famed for its historic cities, lush green farmland, quaint towns and spectacular natural scenery, Ireland has long been the domain of self-drives or coach tours, but now there’s a new way to see this beautiful country, by luxury train.

Belmond is a tourism company who operate a number of luxury hotels, train journeys and river cruises throughout the world. They operate the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express through Europe and the Northern Belle in the UK, so they know what they’re doing!

The beauty of the Belmond Grand Hibernian is that you’re going to be able to see all the sights and attractions Ireland is famous for. You can simply sit back, relax, and take in the views along the way. Three itineraries are currently offered, all starting and finishing in Dublin. The first is a two day night journey north to see Belfast and the Giant’s Causeway. The second heads south on a four night journey to Cork, Limerick, Galway, Killarney, Westport and the Cliffs of Moher. The third itinerary combines the two aforementioned journey
s to make a six night option.

Onboard the train will be a maximum of 40 guests in twin or double cabins. All are beautifully decorated in contemporary style with traditional Irish tartans and tweeds from different counties. Aside from the heavenly bed, cabins also include space for a writing desk, wardrobe, a private ensuite and of course, large picture windows.

Dining aboard the train is an experience in itself. Top chefs use a variety of fresh local produce to showcase authentic Irish cuisine daily. It’s complemented with fine wine from across Europe and served in your choice of two dining cars on the train. In the evening, retire to the couches of the observation car with a wine or a whiskey and watch the scenery go by, or chat away to the other guests.

Numerous stops are made throughout each itinerary for some truly unique experiences. Examples include a private tasting session at the Jameson whiskey distillery, archery or clay pigeon shooting at Ashford Castle, a private tour of Blarney Castle Gardens, home to the legendary Blarney Stone, and more.

To be amongst the first to experience this truly unique way of seeing Ireland, be sure to contact your favourite House of Travel outlet soon. With only 20 cabins and a limited touring schedule, availability is already tight!
