Cruising the Murray River with Captain Cook Cruises

story by: Tom Ricketts

The might Murray River carves its way through South Australia, a region rich with many species of birds, fish and native animals. The golden age of the paddle steamer, when there were dozen plying the waters of the Murray carrying passengers and goods, have long departed but there are still a few grand old ladies on the water. No longer do you need to travel all the way to Mississippi in the USA for the paddleboat experience of yesteryear.

Discover this hauntingly beautiful and dramatic part of South Australian Outback, its unique flora and fauna, the legacy of old riverside ports and indigenous culture aboard the paddle wheeler PS Murray Princess with Captain Cook.

An elegant boat which is the largest in the Southern Hemisphere with four beautifully terraced levels, spiral staircases, and of course, the giant red paddlewheel on the back. She caters to just 120 passengers and with transfers to/from Adelaide, all meals and the majority of tours included, these cruises offer excellent value for money.

Your journey begins just over an hour east of Adelaide in the small riverside town of Mannum where you’ll board the true period style inland paddle wheeler. Experience a unique historic and nature based adventure, through some of the driest parts of the driest continent, past mallee scrub and ancient red gum forests, through towering gorges and ochre coloured limestone cliffs.

Along the way visit historic ports and lush vineyards on your on-shore excursions. You can hike around a boardwalk trail or join a guided nature walk. Take a small boat safari, visit a riverside village and enjoy all the fun of a riverside BBQ.

Sample some of the local produce at the cellar door, or take a camera and catch some memorable scenes as where there’s water, there’s life. As the sun goes down, the Murray Princess switches on the spotlight and approaches the banks of the river. It’s a wildlife enthusiast’s dream as all sorts of wonderful Australian animals come down to the riverbanks for a drink. You’ll spot kangaroos, wombats, tortoises, and many other species.

When on board, head up to the rooftop deck to get some sun and enjoy a glass of award winning South Australia wine. Meals are served in the dining room with fresh local produce and local wines.

Cocktail parties with live entertainment ensure you and the other guests are all having a great time on one of the most unique ways to see South Australia.

The Murray Princess has grown in popularity these past few years so to get the cabin type and dates you want, it's recommended you get in early.
