A Stopover in Kuala Lumpur

story by: Tom Ricketts

Kuala Lumpur, or KL as it is known, is the capital city of Malaysia and home to a whopping seven million people. It’s a real cultural melting pot with less than half the population identifying as Malays! The city can be as chaotic as Bangkok, Mumbai or Beijing, but has the class and refinement of cities such as Singapore, Tokyo and Seoul.

One of KL’s highlights is the shopping. You’ll will of course find all the world’s top fashion brands such as Prada, Gucci and Dior here. But the local markets are where you really want to be. You’ll find everything you could possibly want all sold under the same roof. Spot brightly coloured fruit and veges you’ve never seen before. Beautiful silver and gem encrusted jewellery that looks like it should be in high end antique store. Beautifully painted china and intricately carved wooden items. Chances are you’ll even find more Prada and Gucci in the markets than the actual stores, all cheap knock offs of course. Best of all, everything is dirt cheap.

The cultural melting pot continues through to the cooking pot. Alongside the flash five star dining outlets are small, family run restaurants using grandma’s old recipe, or a completely new dish inspired from twelve different cultures. A highlight is the street food. Vendors have small carts piled up with anything that will fit on a skewer. Take your pick and it’s almost instantly cooked in a pot of boiling hot water and ready to eat.

Fans of architecture will love Merdeka Square where the stately old buildings remind you of the country’s British colonial roots. From the massive landscaped square you’ll spot domes, minarets and church towers all dwarfed by the city’s massive skyscrapers. The crown jewel (or jewels) in KL’s crown is undoubtedly the Petronas Towers. The world’s tallest twin towers rise spectacularly from a beautiful city park and dominate the skyline for miles.

The wonderful city of Kuala Lumpur is the perfect place for a quick stopover during your holiday. If you were to take the best bits from Singapore and Bangkok and combine them to one city, it would be Kuala Lumpur. The eating is good, the shopping is cheap and the sights are stunning!
