Kids and the Sunshine Coast: A pairing almost too good to be true

story by: House of Travel

As a parent, you can struggle to find holiday destinations that appeal to everyone in the family. Mums want rest and relaxation, Dads want fishing and exploring, and kids - well, their wants and needs change daily - but sun, sand and surf are likely to play a big part.

Enter the Sunshine Coast, a Queensland destination that truly has everything your family could possibly want. When you venture to this impossibly vibrant (not to mention sunny) part of the country, make sure you add the following attractions to your itinerary.

Mooloolaba Beach
You're spoiled for choice when it comes to beaches on the Sunshine Coast, but if you have to pick just one for your family day out, make it Mooloolaba. With a 98 per cent favourable rating on TripAdvisor, locals and visitors alike rave about this picturesque stretch of sand and surf.

The beach is widely regarded as being one of the safest for swimming on the coast, thanks to its northerly location that protects it from southerlies and south easterlies. This makes conditions here calm and serene year-round, with a Surf Lifesaving Club on hand to keep your kids extra safe. Great news for keen fishermen - head to the harbour side or entrance walls of the beach for great opportunities to catch dinner.

Australia Zoo

Visit Steve Irwin's pride and joy when you're in Sunshine Coast and marvel at the sanctuary's dedication to Australia's most beloved animals. Australia Zoo isn't all about the animals however - it also aims to promote conservation and protection of flora and fauna and supports a wide variety of charitable causes.

The variety of animals here is huge. Bring the kids along to catch a glimpse of pythons, boas, crocodiles, cheetahs and tigers, along with slightly less intimidating animals such as giraffes, camels, native parrots, turtles and more.

What's more, there's a special range of animal encounters labelled as 'good for kids', which means you'll rest assured your little ones are in safe hands. These include a face-to-face experience with rhinos and cuddles with a giant tortoise.

Stand up paddle boarding
This could either be the relaxing holiday activity of your dreams or a thrilling adventure you'll never forget - it all depends on what you want to get out of it!

Head out onto serene, flat waters for a calm and relaxing paddle in Noosa. There are various paddle boarding companies that can have you paddle surfing through some serious waves on Noosa Beach, so it's kind of a choose-your-own-adventure sort of experience. There are a range of classes on offer which include special women-only sessions alongside sunset paddles and ocean paddles.

The Ginger Factory
For an experience out of the ordinary, head to The Ginger Factory. It not only offers what it believes to be the world's finest ginger products, but also has plenty of fun activities for the whole family to enjoy. Best of all, admission to the park and gardens is free, making this one family activity that won't break the bank.

Hop aboard the Ginger Train for a leisurely ride through the area's gardens, or enjoy the Overboard experience - a water adventure ride that follows the plight of a gingerbread man's voyage around the world. Just watch out for the hungry chefs!

Finally, take some time to explore the acres of tropical gardens, including exotic plants, water features and photo opportunities aplenty.
