Get Inspired / New Zealand Dunedin Cadbury Chocolate Carnival Share on email Print this article Share on Facebook Get Inspired / New Zealand Dunedin Cadbury Chocolate Carnival story by: Tom Ricketts Every July the southern city of Dunedin hosts what could be New Zealand’s most mouth watering festival, the Cadbury Chocolate Carnival! The most famous event during the festival is of course the Jaffa Race down Baldwin Street, however the festival runs for a full week so there’s plenty of other events to keep you entertained, all with their own chocolate goodness. Being home to a Cadbury’s factory, Dunedin is the obvious home for the Chocolate Carnival. The Dunedin factory is one of only two remaining Cadbury factories worldwide that can be visited by the public (the other is in the UK). Tours run for about 75 minutes in which time you’re taught a brief history on chocolate and how it’s made, as well as being escorted through the working factory. You’re then treated to the worlds highest chocolate waterfall which is a whopping five stories! Of course, there’s plenty of taste testing to be done on the way through, and a great giftshop at the end with cheaper prices than the supermarkets. Outside the factory, there’s over 50 chocolate themed events going on throughout the week. Aspiring chefs and artists could take a chocolate decorating or chocolate painting course. For the latest thing in beauty, try a chocolate facial, and then get dolled up for Cadbury Couture Fashion Show. Kids are of course well looked after too, especially when the iconic Crunchie Train comes to town. The pinnacle of the festival is the famous Jaffa Race. In this event, thousands of the humble Kiwi jaffa’s are rolled down Baldwin Street, which just so happens to be the steepest street in the world! Onlookers pack the footpaths as 25,000 of the orange coated lollies race down the street in the name of charity. Each of the 25,000 jaffa’s are individually numbered and tickets for your favourite number can be bought. The first five to make it to the bottom win a prize which you can be absolutely sure, includes chocolate. > Click here to find cheap New Zealand flights Enquire Now First name* Last name* Email* Phone How can we help?
