Enjoy the exotic tastes and flavours of the fabulous Whitsundays

story by: House of Travel

Queensland's Whitsundays region is a mix of coastal and island bliss. Whether you're looking for day after day of indulgent relaxation and pampering, underwater escapades, reef adventures or just general good times in a brilliant beach setting, you're sure to find it here.

Whatever kind of holiday you enjoy in the Whitsundays, the one constant is great food. From the beachfront restaurants of Airlie Beach to the island resorts dotted throughout the archipelago, the food here is so varied and the quality so high that you might need to loosen your belt a few notches as your board your flight home.

There is a never ending list of fabulous dining options from which to choose, but here are some of our favourites.

Fish D'Vine - Airlie Beach
As you'd expect from such a stunning coastal setting, seafood is very much to the fore on the Whitsunday culinary landscape. Fish D'Vine in Airlie Beach has a reputation for serving some of the best seafood going - and it has the awards to prove it!

Wrap your lips around unique dishes such as chilli mud crab or the old favourite of barbequed tiger prawns and wash them down with a cocktail from the adjoining rum bar. Boasting 450 different varieties of rum, you'll have your pick of some of Queensland's best cocktails.

For an even more varied drinks menu in Airlie Beach check out the 700-strong beer and wine menu at Denman Cellars while you enjoy delicious tapas and a splendid view over Port Airlie's marina. Other Airlie Beach hotspots include Capers Restaurant on the Esplanade, where al-fresco dining and pig on a spit make for a most memorable evening, and Tides Restaurant and Bar for fresh prawns and scallops from the nearby reefs.

'Talk and Taste' at qualia - Hamilton Island
A 'Talk and Taste' event Hamilton Island's luxury qualia resort is sure to be one of your more memorable experiences on your Whitsunday adventure. Enjoy a culinary journey with the resort's Executive Chef as he takes you through a tasting of some of Australia's best ingredients and produce. Choose from the 'Sake and Sashimi', 'Champagne and Oysters' or 'Wine and Cheese' options. The events take place against the stunning ocean backdrop in qualia's Long Pavilion lounge.

Meanwhile, for relaxed dining and sumptuous dishes head to Bommie Restaurant at the Hamilton Island Yacht Club. Enjoy a glass of champagne watching the sunset (maybe glimpsing a turtle or two) before sitting down to a meal of fresh and flavoursome seafood or meat dishes.

Also on Hamilton Island, enjoy a taste of Asia at coca chu, whose sumptuous dishes take their inspiration from the hawker-style street food of South East Asia.

Daydream Island
The exclusive resort at Daydream Island is a luxurious escape from the modern world and features plenty of exquisite dining options. Mermaid's Restaurant serves up the freshest seafood, caught from the beautiful waters you can gaze upon as you dine. Then there's the extensive buffet options at Waterfalls Restaurant, which will keep your taste buds happy and your belly full. Or, if you're after a fun family evening and hearty pub food, check out the colourful and friendly atmosphere of the Fishbowl Tavern.

One&Only Hayman Island
For more exclusive resort dining head to the gorgeous One&Only Hayman Island. From a romantic evening under the stars at Bamboo to al fresco dining with breathtaking Coral Sea views at Aquazure, the standard of the food is perfectly matched by the magical dining atmospheres.

Enjoy casual poolside eats at On the Rocks, dine on a secluded beach in the shadow of the rainforest with a specially prepared Gourmet Picnic, or enjoy the very best in Australian food and wine at the resort's signature restaurant, Fire on One.

Once you've indulged in all the exquisite fare, retire to Bar Fifty to discuss the day's events over a cocktail or cold beer.
