Welcome to the Whitsundays: Where You Can Indulge Your Every Whim

story by: House of Travel

Think of the words 'tropical paradise.' Conjure up an image in your head. Now make that image at least 50 per cent better and you might be getting somewhere close to encapsulating just how picture-perfect the Whitsunday region of Queensland is.

The Whitsunday Islands - an archipelago of 74 islands off the northeast coast - are all fringed with stunning white beaches and surrounded by glimmering oceans with the deepest turquoise, aqua and indigo colours you're ever likely to see. Meanwhile, the towns and coastal resorts along the coast are brimming with activities to enhance your holiday.

Whether you're seeking an action-packed adventure or are looking to enjoy levels of indulgence and relaxation previously thought impossible, you're guaranteed to find it on the Whitsundays. Here's a flavour of what you can enjoy on your holiday in paradise.

Fall in love with Airlie Beach

Airlie Beach is the beating heart of the Whitsunday region and the perfect mix of utter relaxation and heart-pumping action.

Resist the urge to drift off an indulgent sunshine-soaked sleep by jumping on a jet ski with Airlie Adventure and explore the marine magic of Pioneer Bay. Feel the wind rush through your hair as you bound along the waves, keeping an eye out for the odd sea turtle or dugong.

Mix it up with the Airlie Beach locals at the Saturday morning markets, with an eclectic mix of local produce and hand-made crafts.

Catch up with the top events on Hamilton Island

Hamilton Island is the perfect spot for a romantic getaway, but it also plays host to some pretty stellar events, which could provide the perfect focal point for your holiday.

From 15 - 22 August the glitz and glamour of the Audi Hamilton Island Race Week sail into town. Rub shoulders with the rich and famous as you chow down on gourmet cuisine and sip on elegant champagnes. On the water, a number of exciting races will take place, the highlight being the Prix d' Elegance.

Meanwhile, the luxurious Qualia resort plays host to a rare and magical pas de deux performance by The Australian Ballet. The unique outdoor setting sees ballet performed under the stars in what is sure to be an unforgettable event.

Relax after those thrilling events with a round of golf at Hamilton Island Golf Course, one of the world's most spectacular of its kind. It might be hard to focus on your game as you marvel at the spectacular views over the Whitsunday Islands.

Luxury and indulgence on Hayman Island

If you want to treat yourself to some pampering and have someone cater to your every whim, look no further than Hayman Island. Both locations boast exclusive resorts and a raft of activities, from the relaxing to the adventurous.

Enjoy a massage in under the tranquil setting of the rainforest canopy at Rainforest Massage. Fitness by Bodyism is the perfect place to get your muscles working after all that relaxation. Or, explore the exciting underwater world with a guided tour from Island Escapades. Snorkel in the glorious waters and watch the green turtles and myriad colourful fish that live on the coral below you.

A multitude of activities at Daydream Island

With three beaches to choose from, one fringed by live coral and an array of coulourful fish life, this island is great for snorkelling. Wallabies roam the grounds, and there island’s centre is a dense tropical rainforest through which you can hike – the options are endless on Daydream.

Gaze at exotic marine life at Daydream Island's Living Reef, with over 130 species of fish to be found in what is one of the world's largest man-made lagoons. Tranquillity is never far away here, either, with Daydream Island's Rejuvenation Spa just waiting to pamper and preen you as you enjoy stunning Coral Sea views.

Round out a romantic day with your partner on Daydream Island with a movie at the Outdoor Movie Cinema - grab a blanket, some snacks and enjoy the entertainment as the sun sets in the background.

Award winning beauty at Whitehaven Beach

Voted as Australia's Best Beach in the TripAdvisor Travellers' Choice Awards 2014, Whitehaven Beach is an absolute must-do in the Whitsundays. Accessible only by air or boat, enjoy the beautiful ocean views from one of the many lookout points and hill walks surrounded the beach, or just lay down your towel, grab a good book and soak up the glorious summer sun.

Stretching for over seven kilometres, the 100% silica sand gives it the white colour, which looks magnificent against the turquoise sea in this tropical paradise.

Whether you have a whole week or just a weekend, the Whitsundays has something to impress you!
