How Will You Spend Your Days on the Sunshine Coast?

story by: House of Travel

From the sun-baked, laid back beaches and swanky restaurants of Noosa to the hedonistic and adventure-seeking coastal area of Mooloolaba, Queensland's Sunshine Coast is a holiday destination par excellence. And that's not even mentioning the lush hinterland with its undulating hills and forests.

Whether you're planning on spending a few days, a few weeks or a few months here, there really is so much you could pack in that it's hard to know where to begin.

But we're going to try. Hold your breath and get ready for an action-packed ride—here's just a taster of what you can enjoy on the stunning Sunshine Coast.

Go wild for wildlife

Animal lovers are in their element on the Sunshine Coast. The whole area is just bursting with exciting opportunities to get up close and personal with cute, cuddly, furry, slimy, leathery and muscly creatures of all shape and size.

The world-famous Australia Zoo, located in Caloundra, is without doubt one of the region's most popular attractions. With over 1,200 animals and a stackload of free feedings and shows every day, it's one of the best wildlife adventures you'll find anywhere. Koalas, snakes, kangaroos, tigers, elephants, monkeys—the list of exotic creatures in the zoo goes on and on and on.

If marine animals are more your kind of thing, head up the road to Mooloolaba, where you'll find Sealife. Sixteen different themed zones take you on an exploration of the magical and mystical underwater world. With over 10,000 creatures, including sharks, rays, sea dragons and Australia's largest collection of jellyfish you'll lose yourself among these curious creatures.

While you're in Mooloolaba, take to the ocean and get up close and personal with one of the ocean's most fascinating mammals—the humpback whale. Sunreef will take you on a once-in-a-lifetime experience where you cruise out across the glorious blue ocean and dive into the water to swim with the whales. It's an adventure beyond words.

For a chance to get a closer look at one of Australia's most iconic animals, the koala, make the trip to Noosa, where you'll find Noosa National Park. With mile after mile of thick bushland, majestic kauri trees and glorious rocky shoreline, it's a pure dream for hikers and outdoor enthusiasts. There are five tracks in the park, ranging from one to eight kilometres long. Keep an eye out for the koalas hiding amongst the trees. If you're lucky, you might even spot the rare glossy black-cockatoo.

Limber up and get sporty

The Sunshine Coast has a tonne of great activities for sporting geeks and fitness freaks. The aforementioned Noosa National Park is perfect for building up a sweat along the scenic walks and tracks throughout the park.

Mount Coolum is another popular hiking spot. The mountain's 208-metre high volcanic dome is a moderate climb and offers terrific views across the surrounding landscape. Over 700 different types of plant will be sure to keep you captivated as you complete the climb, which takes approximately three hours return.

Meanwhile, keen golfers can enjoy a more relaxing sporting venture at the nearby Palmer Coolum Golf Course. Enjoy playing 18 holes on this beautifully landscaped course as the sun shines down. For a round of golf in Noosa, head to Noosa Springs Golf Course, where the championship course, luxury apartments and purpose-built spa provide the perfect environment for a lavish getaway.

Alternatively, get stuck into a proper Sunshine Coast activity and take to the waves of Coolum Beach with Coolum Surf School. The quality of surf here ensures that beginners and long-time surfers will have a blast ducking and diving among the waves.

For more water-based fun head to Pumicestone Passage in Caloundra, where you can kayak among the dolphins and dugongs or travel in style aboard a jetski.

Shop your heart out

If you're the type of traveller who likes to spend your time hopping from store to store, checking out bargains and picking up a gift or two you'll be in your element on the Sunshine Coast. The Sunshine Plaza in Maroochydore is the region's biggest shopping centre. With over 220 stores to browse, you could easily lose yourself for a whole day in here.

Mooloolaba's Esplanade is the place to go for quirky beachfront stores and classy boutiques. Round off an afternoon of shopping with dinner and a cocktail in the many restaurants that overlook the ocean.

The Sunshine Coast is a hotbed of crafts, creativity and quality local produce, all of which you'll find at the excellent markets that take place across the region. The Eumundi Market and Noosa Farmer's Market perfect for picking up unique items and sample tasty local foods. Meanwhile, the Caloundra Street Fair takes place every Sunday and its colourful stalls and eclectic attractions create a fantastic carnival atmosphere.

What more do you want?

If all that isn't enough to keep you entertained, there's still so much more just waiting to be discovered. Yandina's Ginger Factory and tourist park is a unique and interesting experience. Head to the calm and peaceful Mooloolaba Split to while away the hours basking in the sunshine and swimming in the sheltered waters. Or head to Cotton Tree, also in Mooloolaba, where the long stretches of native cotton tree provide the perfect setting for a romantic picnic as the sun goes down.

Or how about the adrenaline rush of the Aussie World theme park? It's thrills and spills galore on rollercoasters and water rides that will make you feel young at heart no matter what your age.

Phew. We're out of breath just writing all that. How will you feel after doing it all for real?
