Cross the Ditch for New Year's Eve

story by: House of Travel

New Zealand is no slouch when it comes to New Year's Eve events - if you've ever been to Rhythm and Vines, you'll know what we're talking about -but there comes a time in every reveller's life when something a bit bigger is on the cards. If you're ready to take your New Years’ experience to the next level, get set to hop across the ditch and enjoy an Australian event to remember. Ain't no party like an Aussie party!

Sydney is widely regarded as being one of the best New Year's Eve destinations in the world, with a spectacular fireworks display from the Harbour Bridge viewable from dozens of vantage points around the city. If you're in the CBD, ring in the New Year at one of the many ticketed parties, or head to Mrs Macquarie's Point for good views and even better bar and catering services.

Balmain visitors will enjoy the suburb's bohemian yet upper-class environment, which has long been home to some of Australia's most famous actors, writers, artists and musicians. If you can tear yourself away from all the cultural excitement, journey to Illoura Reserve for a look at the fireworks over the Sydney Harbour. This option is perfect for families thanks to its alcohol-free atmosphere.

Bondi hipsters will find themselves in the best of both worlds - a beachy paradise matched with views of the fireworks and plenty of excitement to match. North Sydney's foreshore and Kirribilli's streets are ideal for watching these colourful flashes of light shoot through the sky. Relax beachside, dipping your toes in the water if you so wish, and toast to the New Year as the clock strikes midnight.

There are plenty of more formal parties for you to get involved in, such as the glamorous Opera Gala at Sydney Opera House. Leave the crowds behind and kick up your heels (elegantly, of course) to the tunes of Verdi, Puccini and Rossini.

While the Whitsundays don't have quite the same scale of New Year's Eve activities as Sydney, that's part of their charm. Jet off to spend the last few days of the year lounging on palm-fringed beaches, building sandcastles from the purest white grains in the world and sipping on cocktails. Book in to one of the many restaurants for New Year's Evening celebrations or do your own thing at your glam resort - whatever you decide, it will be tinged with a little touch of luxury.

Federation Square is the place to be on New Year's Eve in Melbourne, with a vibrant line-up of entertainment that will have you dancing all night long. Samba dance your way into the new year or sit back and listen to African drums - all enhanced by a canopy of ultraviolet lights - to add a real sense of excitement to the party. Wear white or brightly coloured clothes to make your mark here and take part in the en-masse dance that will occur at the stroke of midnight to Lamine Sonko and The African Intelligence's famous track Light and Shine. The family-friendly event is alcohol free but has a range of restaurants and bars nearby if you feel like downing a cheeky drink or two.

The Brisbane River provides the perfect backdrop for all your New Year's Eve festivities, and both Southbank and the Story Bridge will come alive as current year morphs into the New Year. There are numerous fireworks displays occurring along the river as the night goes on, and plenty of parties, bars and special events for you to head to if the outdoor fireworks-watching experience leaves you wanting more.
