Holiday Bliss for the Whole Family in Tropical North Queensland

story by: House of Travel

You can't say 'Tropical North Queensland' without conjuring up images of beachy wonderlands, sun-speckled rainforests and the gentle tide lapping at your feet. This little corner of the world is truly something special, and it's about time you shared the secret of this oasis with your kids.

The Tropical North Queensland region covers such pristine destinations as Port Douglas, Palm Cove, the Atherton Tablelands, Cairns, Kuranda, Cassowary Coast and Cape York. Of course, no mention of this paradise is complete without singing the praises of the Great Barrier Reef, which is just waiting for you to dive in and explore.

There's no need to find a babysitter, either - your little ones are more than welcome in this effortlessly beautiful region, and there's plenty to see and do that the whole family will enjoy. Plus with fantastic resorts offering a plethora of sparkling pools and activities for all. Here are some of the best activities and attractions.

Great Barrier Reef
The Great Barrier Reef is an unmissable attraction on your holiday up north. It's one of the Seven Wonders of the World and is simply spectacular, featuring an array of visually stunning reefs and enchanting marine life. The best way to experience this special part of the world is by taking a tour or cruise around the many islands that dot the reef, stopping off to plunge into the impossibly blue water for snorkelling and swimming adventures. Opt for a glass-bottomed boat to keep the kids interested while you're cruising along.

Daintree Rainforest
This one's best suited to older kids and those who have an appreciation for the great outdoors. The Daintree Cape Tribulation Rainforest is one of the world's most diverse, and as such is World Heritage listed. The huge rainforest spans 1200 square kilometres and contains the world's largest population of rare or near-extinct animal and plant species. This makes it important to be environmentally friendly when you visit this once-in-a-lifetime location - no leaving your rubbish behind!

The Mossman Gorge Centre near Port Douglas is in the southern part of the Daintree National Park, here you’ll receive the warm welcome of the local Kuku Yalanji people and gain insight into their lives, culture, beliefs and connection to the natural environment.

Further south in Cairns, be sure to experience the Skyrail in comfortable 6-person gondola cabins, gliding above the rainforest canopy for 7.5kms; where you’ll see, hear, smell and become part of the tropical rainforest environment. Upgrade to Diamond Class for a unique glass floor gondola, enabling you to look straight down from the treetops to the forest floor below.

For an extra special treat, journey back to Cairns on the famous Kuranda Scenic Railway for a full day experience. Built over 120 years ago, the Railway winds its way through the tropical mountain ranges between Cairns and Kuranda.

Cairns ZOOm and Wildlife Dome
Let the kids blow off some steam while you admire the cuddly wildlife at Cairns ZOOm and Wildlife Dome, where adventure and animals meet. The all-weather exhibit makes for the perfect rainy-day activity thanks to the massive glass dome that encases the centre. Enter this wonderful wildlife environment complete with lorikeets and cockatoos flying freely around your head, while rainforest wallabies roam at your feet. Those with a penchant for exotic animals can also see pythons and crocodiles here.

What the kids will really be interested in is the ZOOm component of this centre. They'll love the adrenalin-fuelled nature of the high ropes courses, which can put them at eye level with the birds that are flying around. Kids as young as 8 can participate in the ZOOm ropes courses, while the littler ones will likely be so distracted by all the animals they won't even mind missing out on the ropes.

Port Douglas Outdoor Cinema
Moonlight Cinema, located on the lawns of QT Port Douglas, shows new release films and family classics on selected evenings between June-October. Rock up with the family, a blanket or beanbags and picnic in tow; and settle in for the evening for an easy family evening out under the beautiful Tropical North sky.

There is so much fun to be had with the family in Tropical North Queensland sun. If you and the family want to head to the beach to cool off, be aware of your surroundings and take the necessary precautions. Check that you only swim at public beaches during the patrolled times and stay between the flags which are shark netted. Jellyfish (stingers) roam the warm northern Australian waters and are especially prevalent between November and May, ensure you wear a stinger suit or a wet suit to reduce exposure. Also, crocodiles can be found around rivers, freshwater lagoons and coastal beaches. Check local authority sites for more info and safety tips before you go, and ensure you read and obey warning signs – as they are there for a reason. Alternatively, the sparkling resort pools are a fantastic option for the family all year round.
