Whether you're looking for a vibrant, dynamic city centre, serene outdoorsy getaway or a cafe culture you can only dream of, you'll find it all in Victoria's capital. Best of all, there are more than enough child-friendly attractions and activities here to keep your little ones happy, making it the ideal holiday destination for the whole family to enjoy. Just follow our list of the best child-friendly Melbourne activities on offer and you'll never want to leave. Make new friends at the zoo Venture deep into the heart of the jungle... Or, at the very least, the heart of Victoria’s three zoos on offer, which is about as close to an African safari as you'll get in Victoria. Where else in the city can you hang out with more than 300 different species of animals from all over the world? Melbourne Zoo highlights include the Asian elephants and Sumatran tigers, but there are also Aussie favourites such as koalas and kangaroos to be found. Your youngest kids (those aged 3-8) will love the Growing Wild area, which in an interactive zone where kids can play and learn about animals as they explore exhibits, sculptures and other fun areas. Located just out of the city, on the way to the Yarra, Healesville Sanctuary is one of Australia’s most loved tourist attractions and the best place in Victoria to see and interact with native Australian wildlife. The Sanctuary is committed to fighting wildlife extinction, housing the Australian Wildlife Health Centre which treats more than 2000 sick and injured native animals every year. A short 30-minute drive from the city, en route to the Great Ocean Road, Werribee Open Range Zoo offers a unique opportunity to experience an African adventure closer to home and encounter the magnificent animals of the African savannah. Our 200 hectare property is home to some of Africa’s most iconic animals, as well as wildlife from the grasslands of Asia, North America and Australia. Cycle your way round the city Help your kids burn off some of their holiday hyperactivity by taking them on a bike tour of the city with you. Join a tour for a guided adventure through Melbourne, or hire bicycles from one of the many stalls around the city and take your ride at your own pace, stopping off to take in the sights. Tours can cater to all ages and riding abilities, with bicycles, helmets and a light lunch provided. This is a great way to get active while seeing a good chunk of the city. Enquire about making a stop at the Melbourne Star, the Southern Hemisphere’s only giant observation wheel. The kids will love the expansive 360-degree views and feel on top of the world as the Star glides gently through the sky. Shop till you drop You're no doubt well aware of the plethora of shopping opportunities in Melbourne, and there's no reason why kids have to miss out on browsing for bargains. Take a trip to Little Sparrow, which stocks gorgeous natural toys and handcraft supplies. Let your little one select a set of wooden farm animals or a puzzle to treasure, while you stock up on supplies for your crafts. Kids will be enchanted at Geppetto's Workshop, where you'll find old-world wooden toys such as charming marionettes and hand puppets. Crafted with care and consideration, the selection of spinning tops, games and wooden puzzles is simply delightful, and are curated for their quality, style and uniqueness. You won't find plastic, battery-laden cheap products here, but rather traditional toys that will last generations. Take a Great Ocean Road trip Embark on a road trip just out of Melbourne to explore the Great Ocean Road, arguably one of Australia's best and most famous drives. There are more natural attractions than you can poke a stick at here, with plenty of sunny seaside towns to pop in to and explore. Make sure you put time aside to believe in magic at Fairy Park, where you'll find castles, waterslides, mazes and trampolines perfect for the young and young at heart. The beaches along this strip of road are second to none, so be sure to pack your cossies and a towel. Another highlight is Otway National Park, which boasts rainforest and more untouched wilderness than you can imagine. For those who would prefer a day tour, there are family-specific tour options available which include carseats, strollers, carriers, toys and more. Tours are tailored to ensure littlies can last the distance, including regular stops along the way. From feeding cockatoos, to koala spotting, witnessing the penguin parade and taking a ride on Puffing Billy, it’s a magical family trip waiting to happen. Discover the Mornington Peninsula This is another adventure that takes you an hour out of the city centre and into the heart of Victoria's most beautiful scenery, yet it seems a world away. The Peninsula has a Mediterranean feel with its vineyards and olive groves as well as historic country house retreats. The Enchanted Adventure Garden is a must-see, complete with mazes and gardens to keep the whole family occupied. If you're travelling this way during the warmer months, stop in to Sunny Ridge Strawberry Farm and let the kids pick their own punnets of these delicious berries. Plus, once you and family have fully experienced the stunning Peninsula; you can link onto the Great Ocean Road from Sorrento, as there’s a vehicle ferry to Queenscliff.
