Embrace the Concept of Ohana on Oahu

story by: House of Travel

If your knowledge of ohana (which means 'family' in Hawaiian) extends about as far as Lilo and Stitch, it's time you board a plane to Hawaii and truly embrace all there is to love about travelling with your kids. It's true that no one gets left behind here, as there are plenty of attractions and activities that your whole brood will enjoy.

So pack your bags and start dreaming of the tropical holiday you and your family will remember forever.

Waikiki Aquarium
You can't spend every day at the beach - although you can try! When the kids need a break from all that sunshine and fresh air, avoid switching on your hotel TV and instead take them to Waikiki Aquarium. This attraction blends education with fun, giving you an up close and personal look at what lies beneath Hawaii's oceans.

Catch a glimpse of the endemic, endangered Hawaiian monk seal, watch the bizarre-looking frog fish glide through the water and marvel at the huge green sea turtles. If you time your visit well you can take part in interactive experiences, such as meeting monk seals and enjoying a behind-the-scenes tour.

Dole Plantation
Treat your kids to a "pineapple experience" at the Dole Plantation, which is one of Oahu's most popular attractions. It's obviously imperative that you sample the deliciously juicy fresh pineapples or the famous pineapple ice cream, but there's so much more to see and do here.

Ride the Pineapple Express, which is a delightful miniature train that takes you over four kilometres of pineapple territory. It's fully narrated (perfect for adults who actually want to learn) and passes through plenty of beautiful scenery (ideal for restless kids).

If the little ones still have energy to spare, let them run rampant in the Pineapple Garden Maze, declared to be the largest in the world as of 2008. It spans three acres and boasts 14,000 Hawaiian plants, hiding eight secret stations for your family to uncover as you inch closer to the heart of the botanical maze.

Surf lessons
Surfing and Hawaii go together like sausages and barbeques, and if your kids are old enough this is an excellent activity to help get them active for a few hours. Head to famous hotspot Waikiki Beach for the ultimate Hawaiian surf experience, or opt for outrigger canoe paddling if you're that way inclined. Stand up paddle boarding is another attractive option under the hot Hawaiian sun.

Submarine tour
There are few things in this world cooler than submarines, and Hawaii is the perfect place to indulge in a little deep sea action. Take an Atlantis submarine tour beneath the beautiful aqua waters of Maui, giving you a glimpse at natural coral reefs, marine life and fish from the comfort of a high-tech 58 passenger submarine. You'll head more than 100 feet below the ocean, and it truly is a once in a lifetime experience that will delight both kids and adults alike.

And much more...
You’re still only scratching the surface of the family activities available on Oahu. There’s something for everyone at the Wet ‘N’ Wild Hawaii water park. Kids will love 'Keiki Kove', an interactive spray ground, while thrill seekers can head straight to the 'Flyin’ Hawaiian', a water slide that ends in a four metre free fall into a swimming pool. Sealife Park is another popular attraction, where you can feed turtles and sea lions, swim with dolphins and rays and learn about penguins. Then there is the Honolulu Zoo, home to over 900 different animals from the tropics across 42 acres, and plenty of fun activities for all ages.
