California, Here We Come

story by: House of Travel

California is surely the promised land of family holiday destinations. World famous amusement parks, breath-taking natural wonders, beautiful weather, beaches, Hollywood glitz and glamour and much more. Pack up the kids, your togs and head to the nearest airport - you're going to California for more family fun than you’ve ever had!

No California-for-kids write up is complete without a mention of Disneyland, located in Anaheim. The theme park is truly magical for kids and adults alike - there's a reason it's billed as the happiest place on earth!

Disneyland Park is Walt Disney's original theme park, delighting the young and young at heart since 1955. Explore eight themed areas, from 'lands' such as Main Street, Tomorrowland, U.S.A. and Fantasyland through to Mickey's Toontown, Critter Country, New Orleans Square, Adventureland and Frontierland.

Take little ones on a ride aboard Dumbo the Flying Elephant, get spooked at the Haunted Mansion and take on an undersea research expedition with the Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage.

Disney California Adventure Park (adjacent) is home to 8 exciting lands that bring Disney and Pixar stories to life, some of the favourites being the 12 acre Cars Land and The Little Mermaids – Ariel’s Undersea Adventure.

LEGOLAND®, about 35 minutes from San Diego, is another destination that can be as fun for the adults as it is for kids. The park covers a whopping 128 acres and offers more than 60 family rides, along with hands on attractions and shows. Don't miss Dino Island, where you can ride the junior-sized 'Coastersaurus', dig for fossils and lie inside a life-size dinosaur footprint as you learn more about these magnificent beasts.

In the Duplo Village, your littlest family members can play with Lego bricks and enjoy slides and activities geared towards smaller children. Head to Fun Town for attractions such as the police and Fire Academy, Driving School and Skipper School, where you can weave your own Lego boat through a canal. This ride is one of the most popular in the park, so make sure you don't miss out on your trip!

If you want to squeeze a bit of learning into your holiday, head to the Lego Factory Tour for an up close and personal look at how Lego is produced, decorated and packaged. There are also plenty of opportunities to pick up Lego merchandise to take back home with you.

Yosemite National Park
Sneak in some outdoor adventure with a trip to Yosemite National Park, which is beloved for its breath-taking waterfalls alongside valleys, meadows, huge trees and plenty of wilderness across nearly 1,200 square miles.

Cycle over 19 kilometres of paved bike paths, perfect for riders young and old. This is a great way to see the park and get some exercise at the same time - win-win!

There are also hundreds of species of birds within the park, and as such it's been designated an Important Bird Area along with being a World Heritage Site. Help your kids spot American robins, acorn woodpeckers, ravens and mountain chickadees during your stroll, and see if you're lucky enough to find a great grey owl or peregrine falcon.

Monterey Bay Aquarium
Monterey Bay Aquarium is a not-for-profit organisation that has a real focus on environmental sustainability, providing an excellent learning opportunity for your family. Visit the aquarium and get ready to fall in love with the animals here. There are daily otter feedings along with albatross encounters, plus more fish, invertebrates, birds, marine mammals and reptiles than you can poke a stick at.

The newly opened Tentacles: The Astounding Lives of Octopuses, Squid and Cuttlefishes exhibit is a must-see, showcasing a range of fascinating creatures in their natural environment.

Universal Studios
Get ready for the ultimate Hollywood movie experience! Blockbuster films, thrill seeker rides, shows and attractions that will bring your favourite movies to life, Universal Studios is great fun for all ages. Some of the rides will be a bit intense for the youngest children, but there are height and age restrictions to help you decide. Younger kids will enjoy The Adventures of Curious George, which has a water playground and foam ball room for kids. They’ll also love looking out for their favourite characters in the park, like Dora the Explorer and Spongebob Squarepants.
