Things to Do with Kids in Zurich

story by: House of Travel

Switzerland's city of Zurich is a positively magical place to visit at any time of year. In summer it's buzzing with excitement and possibility, and in the cooler month's it's a veritable winter wonderland, looking like something out of a fairy tale.

Zurich also happens to be a great place to travel with the kids in tow, as there's an abundance of things to do that will please everybody.

Here are some of the top activities for families travelling to Zurich.

Get out on the water
During the spring and summer, Zurich offers some of the best watersport activities you can dream of that will keep the family occupied for hours. After all, the breathtakingly beautiful Lake Zurich is right on your doorstep.

There are various boat cruises across the lake, but for some extra fun, hire a pedalo or a row boat and splash around as a family for a couple of hours.

Surrounding the lake are also many picturesque forests, cliffs, parks and gardens, perfect for taking a family nature trail or picnic. Hire some bikes and pedal around the lake taking in the scenery before settling down along the lakefront esplanade for lunch.

In addition to this, be sure to take the Zurichsee ferry boat ride across the lake to visit the town of Rapperswil. This is a charming, scenic village also known as the 'Village of Roses' for its gorgeous floral gardens.

Wander the village and soak in vistas of the towering castle and old-worldly churches and buildings. If you hear gently ringing cowbells, cast your eyes to the hills behind the town and see if you can spot the friendly cows and chalets dotted throughout the countryside - kids love them!

In summer, Rapperswil is home to a thrilling 700 metre long toboggan run, as well as baths and water slides.

During winter, you can enjoy the acclaimed Christmas Markets along Market Lane and at the lakeshore, twinkling with colour and the festive spirit . Take another ferry ride back to Zurich or catch the train.

Take a tour or visit great natural attractions
There are many half-day and day tours on offer around some of Zurich's great attractions, or choose a couple to explore yourself.

One good trip is a visit up Uetliberg, a mountain towering 2,850ft above sea level, providing astounding views. In summer, it's wonderful for hiking, while in winter, it's a hotspot for sledding.

Consider taking a trip to Rhine Falls - the highest waterfalls in Europe - which will keep the kids captivated with its thundering waters. The falls are about a 45 minute drive from Zurich and beautiful scenery is abundant along the way, but make sure you bring a couple of activities to keep young ones occupied on the journey.

Savour the flavours
What child doesn't love sweet treats? Travel to the Swiss chocolate factory called Maison Cailler, established in the 1700s. The trip there takes a bit longer than two hours by car or train. It's well worth the journey, as kids can see the process of chocolate making and of course, taste plenty of free samples.

It's a delicious sensory experience even for adults, with the sights, aromas and flavours satisfying everybody's sweet tooth. Plus, you'll learn plenty about the history of chocolate and how it's made.
