Live the Dream Canal Boating in France

story by: House of Travel

France is one of the world's dreamiest destinations, full of romance, culture and natural beauty.

Did you know that this stunning country can be explored by canal boat? France has plenty of waterways to travel along, and getting around in such a unique way can make your holiday extra special.

Here's some information that will help you plan a canal boat holiday though the South of France.

The Canal du Midi
The Canal du Midi is one of the most popular boating routes through France. It also happens to be one of UNESCO's certified World Heritage areas, thanks to its stunning natural features and man-made engineering wonders.

Why? The waterway itself stretches for 360 kilometres, and joins the Mediterranean and Atlantic. To be navigable, 328 locks, bridges, tunnels and aqueducts had to be built between 1667 and 1694.

With a journey along this gorgeous canal, you get to discover these historical structures for yourself. Visitors are often awestruck at how seamlessly the man-made aspects of the canal blend in with nature.

Boating along the Canal du Midi
Given its long length, there are plenty of areas for you to explore and towns to visit via boat. Canal tours usually operate along different sections of the waterway, so you can choose the part that interests you most.

Locaboat has various trips through the region. One such journey is the 'Midi Lauragais', which runs various circuits leaving from Negra. For instance, one week-long trip heads from Negra to the stunning medieval town of Carcassonne, plus Castelnaudary, a historic port, and back.

Then there's a two week itinerary that visits Negra, Castelnaudary, Carcassonne, Béziers, Bouzigues, Frontignan, Aigues-Mortes and Lattes, for a more in depth experience of the area.

Or you could try one of the 'Midi Minervois' circuits, visiting destinations such as Argens and Trèbes.

Circuits on the Camargue route visit wonderful towns and villages such as Frontignan, Sète and Béziers, too.

See a new side to France and explore a new way of travelling with a beautiful boat trip along the Canal du Midi - it's sure to be a holiday to remember.
