Get the Adrenalin Pumping in Scotland

story by: House of Travel

Scotland's uniqueness lends itself far beyond strong accents and kilts aplenty. One of its best-kept secrets is that it's an exceptional destination for adventure-lovers - and if you ask nicely, you may even get to wear that beloved kilt while you take part!

When you're planning your holiday to this stunning country, be sure to factor in a few of the following adrenalin-pumping pursuits.

Go climbing
Scale all new heights at Edinburgh International Climbing Arena, which is the largest indoor climbing arena in all of Europe. Bring the whole clan with you, as there are activities to suit every age and ability level. Try your hand at abseiling, where you'll descend down a 25-metre drop in the climbing arena to the safety of the ground below. If you're a bit hesitant about traversing down a sheer face, don't panic - you'll be safely clipped in by an expert instructor and you get to control your speed and descent, so it's a go-at-your-own-pace kind of thrill seeking activity.

If you think you've mastered rock climbing, bouldering could be the next step to develop your skills. This is a real test of your strength as you do it close to the group without the safety net of ropes to support you - it's just you, the wall, and the mat below. Head straight to the bouldering room if you're an experienced climber, or take one of the centre's bouldering starter courses to help you find your feet.

Hit the trees
Unleash your inner monkey with a trip to Go Ape, which bills itself as the number one treetop adventure in the UK. This family-friendly part is all about adventure, with more activities than you can poke a stick at. Start with the classic Tree Top Adventure, which will see you spending 2-3 hours zooming through the treetops on zip-wires before heading to the Tarzan Swing to take a leap of faith. You'll receive a full safety briefing before you throw caution to the wind and speed through the trees, and you can even try your hand at some high ropes obstacles if it takes your fancy. Just make sure you bring closed toe shoes with flat soles for this adventure.

Ponies and paintball, anyone?
When you can't choose between horse riding and playing paintball for a day of fun and thrill seeking in Inveraray, head to Argyll Adventure for a location that offers both.

Start out at Castle Inveraray for a paintball experience to remember forever. Roam through woodland to play up to 10 game scenarios, with a safety briefing and tuition beforehand ensuring you get the most of this gung-ho activity. Shoot paint pallets at your nearest and dearest for half a day or full day, or head there during summer for an evening session. If you've heard horror stories of bruises (and bruised egos) don't get too worried - you'll have your own mask, goggles, body armour, gloves and combat suit for protection!

If you're after something a little more subdued, hop atop a horse. Kids and adults alike (though there is a weight limit) can try a pony for a gentle ride, with a coach helping you get to grips with horse riding. Once you've figured out the basics, try a scenic trek to take in the best of the Argyll countryside from a unique new angle. If you're really confident on the horse, try a fast ride, which will see you galloping over uneven ground through woodlands in the early evening. A qualified instructor will guide your way, but there's nothing quite as freeing as the feeling of speeding down a serene setting on the back of a trusty steed.
