story by: Mike Williams

On British Columbia's west coast, nestled against a stunning snow-capped mountain backdrop and with gorgeous water views on three sides lies one of the most beautiful cities in the world, Vancouver. As well as fantastic destination for lovers of the outdoors, history and culture, it also happens to be a foodie Shangri-La, where gastronomes flock to sample from Vancouver’s delectable smorgasbord.

A truly multicultural city, Vancouver has an astounding variety of cuisines available‚Äč. The city's spectacular location means it’s equally at home showcasing the fruits of the sea, wild, vine or field. Variety certainly is the spice of life for a foodie in Vancouver: Graze your way through the Granville Island Public Market; chill out with a coffee on Robson Street; enjoy an exotic feast in one of North America’s largest Chinatowns; indulge in fine dining in Gastown or sample from Vancouver’s famous food trucks. Even the fast food French fries are better in Vancouver: called poutine, they are often topped with gravy and cheese curds.

A local foodie tour is a great way to experience the culinary assortments on offer. The Market Experience Granville is a chef-guided culinary market tour through the Granville Island Market. Your small group its way through the distinct areas, learning from the professionals on where to shop, what ingredients to buy and, most importantly, what to do with them. The World’s Best Street Eats Tour is the most mind-blowing lunch experience foodies will ever have – five courses, seven tastings and nine stories. Drool over delicious Berkshire pork terimayo, butter chicken naan kebab, hot smoked wild salmon sandwich, fried rice balls and topped off with a chocolate diablo cookie.

For a change of scenery, hope on a ferry to the Vancouver Island, or try the floatplane for a bird’s eye view. Vancouver Island is home to Victoria, the capital of British Columbia and one of the oldest cities in the Pacific Northwest. It’s filled with charming historic architecture, an elegant reminder of its British colonial past. A culinary paradise, Victoria boasts the second highest number of restaurants per capita in North America and many of the restaurants pride themselves on menus created using local Vancouver Island produce. Be sure to indulge in a traditional afternoon tea in the Empress’ Tea Lobby, a beloved tradition dating back over a hundred years. No trip to Victoria is complete without visiting Rogers Chocolate Shop, makers of exquisite chocolate treats since 1885.

For its unique offerings, variety and quality, not to mention the breathtaking setting, Vancouver is a must for foodies. A great walking and biking city, not to mention the plethora of outdoor pursuits available, you’ll be sure to build up an appetite.
